my dog is worried about the chicks!

My dog sees my chickens and thinks "Lunch Time." He's never gotten the opportunity to be around them but we put the dog run and the chicken run right next to each other so the dogs can guard them and let us know if any predators are near. The first week all he did was bark at them. My DH had to put a large piece of plywood in the way of the dog fence so he couldn't see them and shut up. He's better now and doesn't constantly bark at them anymore. It was a pain in the butt before though.

My golden retriever does this too..infact she will stand there sniffing..and or barks at me..to get my attention..runs to the brooder

When I take them out... She cleans them..licks them, gathers them up with her paws

She thinks their her babies..lmao

She did this with the first two hatches this year..lol
I notice she isn't doing it with this last hatch..I gather she is done having chicks for awhile..lol

So I absolutely beleive u

So we have 2 jack russells. One of dogs was raised with chickens, the older one was with us before the chickens. If any of you know anything about Jacks, they love to hunt. It was really tough at first to get everyone to coexist, but we did it. The jacks only give chase on the birds once in a blue moon.

Same thing happened to me today. Was holding one chicken and tried to present it in a calm controlled manner to one of my dogs and she slowly opened her mouth then clamped down on the tail feathers

She thought her wishes were finally being fulfilled.

When I had my broody hen and the eggs hatched a few days early the only way I knew there were chicks was because my lab just sat and stared at momma! She loves to have babies in the house. She is such a good girl that if one gets "lost" outside I just tell her to find it and she takes off to find where the little turd has wandered off to.

X 2 !!!

Our Rottie watches them in the brooder with her little stump just a wiggling. And she sleeps on the floor next to the table they're on. My DH lets her sniff and lick the chicks, but that's as far as our dog/chicken interaction goes.
