So sorry for your loss and for the trauma to your birds... hope the rest make it!

Everyone at my house MUST live in peace and harmony with anyone who comes here to live (even if here for only the short term). Dog adores the cats... cats sleep with the chickens (even the day old chicks)... etc. We start everyone out with contact from the time they come here to live and the elders are a good example for the young'ens.

My GSD came through the gate this morning right into the middle of mommy and 3 chicks... had to laugh... mommy banty jumped a foot off the ground to get right into the face of the GSD... GSD just backed up and gave them their space...

The survivors were still alive when I checked on them before dark.
The incubator is stable, kinda surprised since everyone has a bad thing to say about it at one point or another, lol.
I may have a home for the chicken killer, she has kids in college and a few little inside dogs for her to play with. I believe she said she had 2 cats, too, but that should be fine also. She is talking to her husband about it and will get back to me. And I will have to see if I can let her go or if I end up building her a kennel first thing in the morning and refuse to let her go..heh

Sorry that you lost your chickens, but your dog is not a BAD dog. There are dogs with high prey drive, and dogs with low prey drive. Dogs can be trained if they have low prey drive, but I think if you blame a dog for attacking a chicken it is like blaming a snake for eating a mouse. It is nature. We are the caretakers of our animals.

I am not blaming her, her prey drive is ridiculous. I think now I am more mad at myself, but s*** happens...
She's a high risk dog to my birds and future birds. We will see what happens...

I am so sorry about your loss.

I also had a scare last week. I come home to my DH telling me out English Bulldog slipped out of his collar and was terrorizing the chickens when he found him off of his lead. Of course I was freaking. But everyone was OK thank goodness. I think he was just scaring them. But he got the worst of it. He had a gash on his forehead that looks like the chickens might have taught him a lesson.

I am sorry for your loss. There is no dog that will not kill chickens or at least try to. You think the dobie won't do it? You are feeding him raw meat. They will all do it even the little toco bell doggie! You put the dobie in with a chciken and walk away and see what will take place. Getting rid of the dog does not fix the problem, it just prolongs it til the next time. My birds have thier own place and the dogs have thiers. I have 4 dogs: a pit bull, 2 pointers and a shephard mix. The pointers are trained not to kill or bite the birds but still I will not leave them in the yard together cause even I know something is going to happen and I do not feed them raw meat.

I had a neighbor who fed his dog raw meat and when he went on vacation he would just let the dog loose to fend for itself and it did eating and killing all of my animals when I was younger. With all the dog foods and treats out there why are you feeding them raw chicken? Then they are no good when they help themselves to the live ones. You think the dobie will know the differnce between a piece of dead raw meat or the live raw version? My friend's dog killed a bunch of chickens at the horse barn when she just let it loose. There went a chicken and the dog following it. Killed 9 hens, smashed the eggs and the only living bird was the rooster which hide up inside the barn.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss but getting rid of the dog is not that answer.

I believe if I locked him in the coop, he would first start to whine and cry and then panic and try to get out. If I aclimated him to being in there alone, he would sniff bird butts, sniff and mess up bedding, prolly eat their food too! If he would lay down and they got too close or accidentally touched him, he would try to scoot away and then get up and find a new spot.

I believe that if you get a puppy, of any breed, and let them grow up with them, they will be fine. That is what people do on farms with their cattle dogs or other dogs to protect their flocks of all sorts.



I brought in Sassie, one eye is...er, 'deflated' and hanging out the closed lids. The other eye is closed, I am not sure how much damage it has. Her mouth seems a bit less messed up. I haven't seen her eat or drink. I don't know how I should go about doing that with a mouth injury. She stays puffed in one spot, though she did move overnight in the coop. She is in a dog carrier with a chick waterer and a dish of crumbles. I mixed 2 different chick foods with her regular adult food.

I know it will be hard but I think ahem...cough... that you should put Sassie down.She is in pain and will be in pain for the rest of life if she stays alive.Dogs are 1 of the 2 reasons I dont let my chickens free range(they have a run)(the other reason is foxes)I'm sorry for your loss
