*my* dog killed a neighbor's chicken!!!!

Can you go up and over the gate, or can they get in through the closed gate, too? Could you post pictures? Maybe then people could give better advice as to how to make that work.

There is a big gap underneath the gate, due to the wheels. I block it up everyday after my husband leaves, unblock it when he gets home and block it back up. It really is a pain. We thought about pouring a custom molded concrete speed bump type thing. But a live electric wire on the bottom would be even easier and probably work better. They do climb or jump the fence but the gate sits a little higher and they haven't yet come over that.

Someone in this thread said that fencing is cheaper than firearms, which I just want to note is entirely untrue. You can get a single shot shotgun for about $100. I just fenced in 1/4th of an acre with 4 ft high field fencing and it cost me over $500. Just felt the need to chime in.

A firearm will only protect when YOU realize there is a problem and go running out to shoot the problem (assuming of course you even can shoot it). A fence protects 24/7 even when you are sleeping.

If you depend on a firearm to defend your flock you will almost certainly take losses before you even realize there is a problem. If you even manage to "kill the problem" the next day you are in the same boat and another problem could come along at any time. That is completely unacceptable to me. I also have no desire to kill wildlife OR domestic canines especially when it can be easily avoided with basic safety measures.

Plus quality firearms are in fact pricey and just like fencing you get what you pay for; a good handgun will run several hundred and it is easy to spend $2000+ on an AR once you buy all of the accessories and such. I don't buy junk firearms, I realize my life and the lives of my loved ones may depend on them in a crisis.

A few people here assume those with firearms ONLY have firearms and no fencing as protection for their flock... I just find that amusing.

Lack of fencing/secure enclosures seems to be a pretty common!

This thread is just one small example, people on this forum are always posting that dogs or other predators (including their family dogs) managed to hurt or kill their chicks/chickens and 99% of the time they did NOT have fencing or other basic security measures in place.

If you and y9our neighbors work on training the unrestrained dogs and birds, it can be heavenly as benefits of free-range foraging can be realized. If the "half-butt" or "my way or the high" approach is taken then every body in your area will be acting like a bunch of warlords defending their property and stock.

I agree. And for people who already have a gun, what's a bullet cost? I'm not talking about shooting any dog, but this idea of fencing came up when talking about a pack of strays tgat were also trying to or had attacked people. I'm sorry (really, I'm not) but I've got no use for a dog that bites unprovoked. I love dogs, have had them all my life, but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot one if the situation called for it. I have a 4 year old little boy who is more important.
For the record, my own dogs are behind chain link in our back yard. We are not interested in fencing our entire property. We have about 2 1/2 acres that we consider our yard. That would cost thousands, materials only, and look like crap. Living in the country, why would I want to do that? I don't. Part of the appeal is the view.
