*my* dog killed a neighbor's chicken!!!!

Pics
Your chickens will feel the zap but it won't harm them, the electric poultry fences have just as much juice and they aren't killing the chickens.

Oh good, my husband was worried. He says the electric wire for the under gate area, needs to be put on at a 45 degree angle inside the yard to avoid, both to avoid the rollers and some kid or something brushing up against it accidentally doesn't get shocked. So he was concerned the chickens might get zapped and possibly killed. Would wet geese be at risk? Those guys are almost always wet, they rarely wonder near the gate as it is a gravel driveway, but they might follow a chicken over there.

Just don't buy a charger for large animals or for tens of acres. The chargers are all "pulsating" these days so the shock lasts a second and stops, that prevents anything from getting shocked to death. Unless your birds have heart problems they should be fine, they may even brush against it and not feel it because of the feather insulation.

Build a containment system for your dogs.

One of them have three puppies so she is calmed down, but it is not just the dogs, the chickens squeeze into the dogs pen! I don't want to lose Isabella!

Though, all of the ones who were caught wondered around without the flock and didn't watch for predators.

Thanks for the quick helpful responses. We are going to install the electric fence a section at a time, starting with the gate!

I will look into this. I would only have to electrify the front fence. My back fence butts up against my parent property, the left side fence is 5 foot wooden privacy fencing, and the right side is more chain link, but the dogs would have to break into my neighbors property and then break into mine. So just the front, but I would need 2 strands, top and bottom to prevent digging or jumping. Any suggestions for an automatic gate on rollers? My hubby would not thank me for making him put in a manual gate.

Okay so I am imagining a chain link gate on rollers. If the ground is even is there any reason you can't add additional fencing BETWEEN the wheels? Either a secure pipe or hardware cloth or something of the like? Evening out the ground and making the fence flush to the ground may be a lot better in the long run than hot wires. Electric fencing requires continual maintenance and the units are fragile so with lightening and such they can need to be replaced.

The ground is not even, it's gravel. Even if we pour concret to smooth and level it though there is no way to add to the bottom of the gate. There are 2 top rollers and 2 bottom rollers, spaced about 5/6 feet apart. The bottom bar of the gate is on the rollers and so is the top bar. On the outside, (street side) of the rollers is the chain link fence, on the inside (yard side) of the rollers is the 3 inch diameter support pipes that hold the gate and further inside the yard is the motor. But the motor is really close to the gate itself. There is no room to weld anything large to the top or bottom of the gate. Even if you attached to the middle you still have to have clearance for the rollers, support pipes and motor. I can try for a pic, today I am not blocking up my gate as we are doing a benefit/donations drive for an 86 year old man 2 houses down that lost everything to house fire Easter Sunday. He is currently staying with us, in a small effiecny apartment we had empty on our property. Friends and family are parking in my yard, it can hold 6 trucks in 2 rows in the main driveway,2 in front of my hubbies shop, also in the yard, and 2 outside the yard in a second smaller driveway, so I am parking central and need to open close the gate a lot today. I just hope the dogs don't come by.

What you have is the direction my area is evolving towards. Many dogs are free-range and do not cause issues. A minority do and that is being improved by some combination of training, better dog confinement and in some instances culling. The whole community must be involved with training dog like they would be with kids.
(Emphasis added.)

Yeah, start culling the breeders/owners of the dog and the problem will be fixed. The dogs are NOT the disease, they are the symptom and the victims of evil and ignorant human behavior.

If I ever have to cull a dog because of an attack on my home or loved ones and I know who the owner is they should be very very concerned, revenge is best served cold.

Breeders are responsible for their dogs for LIFE! Whether they gave the puppies away or simply let them turn into strays.

Yup. It's too bad stupid/ignorant/selfish people can't be spayed/neutered. All they do is breed more of the same, and a lot do the time they have more kids than they can support as well.

Kill the dog?!?! Now, I don't know about killing the dog...

Sonya9 is not saying to kill the dog. She is saying it is entirely the owners or breeders fault for what their dog does. If people cared and took responsibility then their dogs would be confined and not be a menace to others.

In most instances, the dog pays the price of poor ownership.
