sad day for my family......my soon to be gone dog broke his chain and killed 2 of my 3 my three turkeys and 7 adult hens.
I have one turkey with what looks like a dislocated wing at the half-joint,and one of my muscovies cant walk, she is still eating and drinking but just flaps about to move.
What Im wondering is,should I cull them both?
The lone turkey looks a little stunned,no blood or obvious wounds, but its the duck im more worried about.
She has a canine hole in her back, not a whole lot of blood, but she cant walk.
And my young drake has a few holes in one of his legs.
Problem is I have little money, but want to help them.
What can I do?
My 3yr old daughter is very upset...........and Im very bummed out for her.
I just want to go out and kill my dog,but rehoming is the other option ill try before the next step.
There goes my familys Xmas feast, and some nice pets:(

OMG!!! I am so sorry. That has got to be very hard. I think I would've rung the dogs neck

.

If it was me, I would try to clean the wounds as much as possible, and try to make them as comfortable as you can. Keeping their food and water close, and keeping them in a
smaller area, to restrict movement.

I still cant believe that happen. the poor things. I really hope things work out for the ones that are left.

I'm sorry about your disaster; it must have been a terrible shock. You and the kids have my sympathy.

In the heat of the emotion of losing all your pets, it's hard to keep rational about the fact that it wasn't a personal attack on you and your family from the dog's perspective. He's just doing what dogs do which is chase things that move and kill them if possible. I hope that you can find a chickenless home for him but, depending upon his breed, he may never be trustworthy around other small pets either.

Once again, I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you find the courage to go get some more chicks and baby turkeys.

As for the injured birds; isolate them, keep them warm, crank up the nutrition with scrambled eggs, vitamins, etc, put medication (Neosporin without any 'caines) on their wounds and let Nature do her thing. It's amazing how a badly injured animal can sometimes pull through and do as long as they have some support from us.

Sorry for your loss. Had the same thing happen to me about 3 weeks ago I lost 20+ birds. Got rid of the dog the next morning.

As far as your wounded birds That would be your call if you can get some kind of meds on the sores they might survive.

Good luck

cheers guys!
I know the dog was doing what comes naturally,I cant blame him in all reality.
I cant believe how much its gotten to me.....im an ex motor cycle club member, and thought I was quite a hard nut....apparently that goes by the wayside as one ages ive found.
I still have 7 cobbs and 8 shavers, but my turkeys and the faithfull bantys are no more.
I spotted 2 chooks hanging around, but i think they are too wary to come close enough to recapture.
man im going to miss my turkeys, they were so friendly.
As said,I really hope the injured ones pull through.
What should I do with the duck that wont walk, and the turkey with a possible broken wing, father in law says give them the chop,im inclined to as they will be paining, but I cant bring myself to do it incase they really want to live.
Big frowns round here today

I know exactly how you feel, I have been there with our puppies that think chickens are chew toys. I think your turkey may be in shock, and it probably won't survive this ordeal. I hope I am wrong. Clean wounds and apply antibiotic ointment at the least.
I am sorry and I know it is upsetting. Finding a new home for the dog is the best option if you have no way of keeping it separate from the rest of your animals.
Good luck.

I've lost several chickens to my dogs. I have very high prey drive type dogs and try my best to keep them separated. However, chickens get loose and fly in the dog pens, or dash across the path of my dogs as I lead them outside. One bite one kill usually, and as much as I hate to loose my girls, I know it's just the dogs being dogs.

I have managed to rescue a couple of the hens that got chewed up by a dog or fox. Usually what I do is put them in a dark quiet place, clean the wounds and apply an antiseptic ointment. I make sure they are at least drinking and will dribble water into her beak.

Sorry you lost your birds.

let me know when you have rehomed the dog and I'll send you some eggs; chicken and turkey.
Hug your kid she's three she'll forget, and dispatch the suffering injured. Freeze them and save them for xmas feast.

Broken wings can mend, you might want to wrap it up in some vet wrap to make it less painful and give him some aspirin, 3-5 baby aspirin to a gallon of water. With the duck I would confine it to a box or kennel, put food and water w/aspirin near, cean any wounds w/ sterile saline and apply a plain neosporin, add vitamins to the water after you are done w/ the asprin water...then wait and see how it does. Shock and pain/swelling can put a lot of stress on a duck/bird. If you can give it some time and see if it will pull out of it. So sorry....
