As some of you all know, my daughter has decided to live in Spain.

She is about a year away from citizenship and I REALLY need some

kind of a way to contact her and speak with her on a regular basis.

The only contact she has is a cell phone. She hates email and I

have not been able to get her to use it. She says she has to go to

an internet Cafe and it cost a bit of money.

So, any one have a loved one they call on a regular basis and are

willing to share how they resolved the long distance country to

country calling so it is within a reasonable amount ?

Thanks in advance: rim

I believe there are some really good nation to nation plans on cell providers like Verizon. I wish I could more help. It would break my heart if my son was so far!

skype.

I have friends who are sailing and they use skype to call my landline. I don't know whether there is cost involved with that, but using skype computer to computer is free and you can even do it using webcams.

My son (14) spent 10 days in Spain this Summer, and on advice of Verizon I bought him a calling card.

I was going to get him an International capable cell phone, but he said the phone was ugly, and I was unnerved by the hidden charges that kept popping up during the shopping process. The last straw was when I was ready to sign for it & was told 'of course you'll have to change your plan'. Our plan is no longer available and we like(d) it. [Another story... he ran the bill up $130 in July and I had to change to get more minutes. They reversed the $130, but it still increased the base price by more than they said it would. Grrrr.]

He didn't call me once! He could have used any phone but he said someone was always on it when he had time.
I used the card to call him, twice. I interrupted his dinner

I presume your daughter is not a teen and/or will actually call you.

The card was cheap, the 'live help' person was very nice, and I wish I had paid a little more for minutes that never expire.
They sent me the PIN by email, no actual card is needed.

There were many when I googled it, this one just felt 'right'.

Thank you all.

Laurieks , I am going to give this a trail.

My daughter is 21 and very responsible.

She is in Malaga and doing an "internship" with a hotel
management position.

I have been very supportive of her decision and i am
always blown away when she strikes up a converstaion
with someone in Spanish.

She has been so integrated into the country and its language
that she says people do not even know she is from the states.

I say good for her, but i sure do miss her.

My DH travels out of the country a lot, and we use skype. It's the easiest and cheapest way to do it. We even bought one of those cordless skype phones, that we call the bat phone.
