My duck/chicken life

They are adorable :love
Thanks. Baby is a bit of a trouble maker. XD

Just a few days ago, she spent the last few days trying to roost in the storage loft thats above the main roosting area and nesting boxes. I went out there one evening to close everything up and do a head count, but baby was missing, so I set out to find her. I followed her chirps into the coop, thinking she decided to roost in the inside part of it, but she wasnt there, so I looked outside again, but she wasnt there, so I followed the chirps back in and checked the boxes, no baby there. Then I heard something above me, and guess what I saw?? A mini chickilen propped on one of the.lofts support beams. I went in to find a camera since it was a good shot, but came back out cause I didnt have one available. But it was enough time for her to move all the way to the back of the loft. Needed a ladder to get her down.

Funny thing is, she didnt know how to get herself down.

That happens way too often... They get someplace and forget how they got there. And are convinced they can't get out. Keep a close eye on your poults, as they are notorious for such issues, that and finding really creative ways of committing suicide.

Thats just great. Heard they can suicide from getting stuck in a cardboard box.

I take a page out of OLD history... I like to put a few week old chicks in with the poults. They will mentor them and keep them out of trouble, but I will inevitably lose the chicks when adults. Once mentoring turkeys, they want nothing to do with other chickens. And invariably they'll die protecting their "kids" even though their kids are 20lbs heavier than them. I've seen some crazy things since doing birds. I had four young turkey toms that saw a hawk coming after their mentor, they took flight to scare the hawk away. I had a barred owl successfully kill one of my mentors, just to be killed and eaten by the turkeys.

Just last night, one of my turkey friends found three of her poults stuck between the brooder box and the wire. How they got there no one knows.
