My duck has Green Poop... should I go to the vet? (PICS)

How did the appointment go? Ive been rooting for you guys and wish i could help more.
💞💞💞 You all have helped so much!! Booby and I say thank you for everyones advice and support!!! You all have kept me sane for real!

So Booby’s diagnosis is still unclear but the XRay showed that his GI tract is inflamed, hence the skinny poos. The liver and kidneys looked okay in the Xray but she called for bloodworm just to make sure. She told me the bloodwork wouldnt actually tell us exactly what is wrong or change his treatment but it would give us an idea of kidney and liver function and red blood cell count ...for $200.... since the vet appt was ALREADY at $450 (!!!!!) I chose to get back to them tomorrow about whether I wanted bloodwork sent off. I’m not really looking to spend more money especially if its not really going to change anything but if anyone here can think of a reason to reconsider, I’m all ears. They did not want to do a gram stain test on Booby, citing that they only do that if theres a fungal component, but I think it might have just been that by that time it was already 20 minutes past closing, so maybe they felt they had everything they needed to know. The vet said the bloodwork would be more bang for my buck which leads me to wonder... how much is a gram stain test? I used to do those in lab and when I interned at the zoo and they were relatively easy? But then again, when I was a bartender and someone tried to order a beer after closing I’d def just say “oops, kegs tapped!”

I DIGRESS
Based off the Xray, the vet said it is probably enteritis...
NOW, this could be bacterial enteritis, Parasitic enteritis, or the DREADED viral enteritis which would be the kiss of death for my whole ducky family 😩

Vet gave him a .3mL dose of panacur and gave me some to take home and give to the whole flock (but just a single dose which idk if thats right or not?) to nuke possible worms. She also switched his antibiotic to Sulfameth/trimethyl (what the bottle says) which she said targets the gut while the doxycycline booby was on before is more for the respiratory system. I also had them give him fluids since after they woke him from sedation and after the 2 hr drive there he was PARCHED and his beak was cracking. after they did that, they showed me how to correctly tube feed and sold me Emeriad omnivore formula to tube feed (i think you can only get from vets?) which was expensive but very worth it although i have not tried kaytee formula yet

Also the xray i think showed his lungs were clear? But maybe im remembering that wrong. in any case they looked good in the xray

Now that we’re home, Booby is still sleepy and not hungry but his energy is def still there, I will monitor him through the night and morning and follow up with his progress!!

without further ado, here he is, folks, the sweetest and most expensive drake in the American Midwest.... BOOOOOOOBYYYYYY

I get bloodwork done on my ducks all the time. At least twice yearly, sometimes more if they are really sick. It doesn't always give us any usable information, but sometimes it does and it always rules out infection. Via regular CBCs my ducks have been diagnosed with possible avian chlamydia, anemia, and avian malaria. At times the vet has said something like, "these numbers are weird and we don't know why so we need to do this test." Then we do an ultrasound and we find out why. Or we did the ultrasound and still didn't know. Birds are complicated. I understand not doing it, it is very expensive.

The Emeraid formula is thinner and easier to tube feed, in my experience. It is also higher in calories, than the Kaytee. Unless things have changed from when I was using it you can only buy it from a vet, unless you are a licensed rehabber. My vet ran out and I was scrambling all over to get more!! I tube fed 3 times daily for a month.

I have my panacur label somewhere, I'll try to find it. I thought it was like a week on, a week off, then a week on. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

Booby looks so sweet and hugable!

I found it! It was give it for 5 days repeat in 3 weeks. I swear the other vet had me do it a bit differently. Well, this was a couple years ago. Here's the label. Maybe call the vet tomorrow and verify.

see that sounds a lot more like wht i expected, they said i should only do it once a month for ducks but i feel like based off what ive read and the fact that booby could have an acute infection that i should do a longer treatment. I’m going to call my avian specialist from home to dbl check. this vet i think primarily did lizards though she also saw birds but she was really careful about doing things according to fda guidelines bc its technically a “food bird” which maybe why she said only one panacur dose?

😥one hour after tube feeding and Booby just threw up 😓😓 vomit was clear. Ugh I really hope he isn’t taking a turn for the worst just when we found help 😩 Waiting for the home vet to get back to me about the length of panacur treatment

My vets also follow FDA guidelines regarding "food animals." At least at first. If that fails or my bird is going to die they will use other non approved treatments. I actually understand - they can have their licenses revoked and even go to jail. It can still be frustrating to use less effective medications, though, because my pet is a duck instead of a parrot.

I hear ya I totally get why they stick to those rules I just wish they could bend for dear booby 😓 his poops are getting skinnier and he’s completely refusing all food including grapes 😥🥺 I hope this isnt the end of the road for him. I’m still confused about the single dose of panacur and the vets office texted me telling me they’d get back to me by the end of the day but must have forgot so im just worrying that he may not make it through thw night :( he was tube fed today but he’s just so tired and for good reason too. I can’t imagine how bad he’s hurting if he’s refusing his beloved grapes
