My Duck Is Stuck In The Chimney!* Happily reunited with the flock =) *

First you need to get some strenght into the bird. That means warm room, food and water. Electrolytes are a very good idea. Add some sugar into the water for fast energy. Don't bath her yet, because the water will weaken her. Do the cleanup later on when she has calmed down and regained some of her energy. The you can clean her up and put Neosporin onto the sores. Best to have some warm water with betadine for clean up. She will be fine.

Get that darn cap back onto the chimney.

First thing I'd give her is a bowl of boiled eggs cut up in small pieces. If she doesn't seem to want it, try adding some milk to it. I'd add some vitamins as well. Along with that I'd toss some finely chopped greens on a plate for her to dig into. I'm so glad she's out, been worried sick for both of you!!

Ok -

1. cap is back on the chimney!! YAY!

2. Sugar + water = DO you mean real sugar? and how much per cup of water? i dont want to over do it.

3. What is betadine?
where can i get it?

4.Neosporin = check!

THANK YALL!!

What else can i give her for energy? and is there any soft food i can give her because im worried with all that soot that she might have a sore throat

Just a little if you give sugar water, a pinch in a cup, real sugar. Gatorade or pedialyte gives them water, sugar and electrolytes and this is essentially what they would do at an emergency vet clinic, either by mouth or in the vein, if they can do it.

Don't worry about Betadine, just clean her up, with water and a little soap, or a wound cleanser, or whatever you have, put a little Neosporin on her since you have it, and start offering any food/drink she will accept and you have on hand. Scrambled eggs usually go over well, but really, fluids are the most important thing in the beginning, and you can probably feed her most anything in your fridge or pantry. Your common sense will get you through, that and concern and care for her, which you obviously have.

So glad this turned out well!

Betadine is providone iodine solution, a surgical scrub. Iodine in solution, essentially. Sold in drug stores. It's a good wound cleaner, but only for the first cleaning and only if the wound is really dirty; after that it tends to kill off healing new cells. That's why iodine stopped being so popular for people years ago.

What kind of vitamins? I dont have any boiled eggs available, but she now has some baby spinach leaves cut up for her. What does milk do for them?

Infant vitamins in the drug store, for human babies, without iron. Just a few drops a day at most. Milk is just a protein source.

Really, relax, give her whatever you have. I'm sure you can cook some oatmeal or mash up some leftover chicken and dumplings or whatever. Just get some fluids in her first, if she will take them, or soupy food if not, as adding milk or water to the food will get the liquids in her.

I use Poultry Vitamin powder but you can use Polyvisol without Iron as well. Like the above poster said, milk is protein, when I have a sick bird I add milk to their mash or boiled eggs and they tend to gobble it up much faster even when they're feeling fussy.

Ok - well my little mama is now in a dog carrier, in a warm room, with sugar water and a bowl of corn and greens. Once ive given her a little while to settle im going to get her in that tub to rinse out her wounds before i put some neosporin on her.

THANK YALL so much!!!! I truly appriciate it! Ive never had a duck down the chimney, but i guess now i cant say that, lol. Hopefully that cap will stay on for a loooong time, even when im gone so that this little mishap wont happen again.

Wow - I didn't think you'd get her out alive! Congratulations!!!!

You can get Betadine at your feed store. You can also get it at the drug store, but it's much more expensive. You need to dilute it with warm water to about the color of a weak tea. Then let her soak in it. It will get in every scrape and cut and help clean them out.

I agree with the others, though, wait until she's a little stronger before you try to clean her up. The important thing right now is to get water in her, not on her!

Again, congratulations, good job!
