Hello!!! My oldest Pekins are about 7 weeks old now! This is our first time, we just moved to a house with over 4 acres and I thought I wanted our first pet to be a dog, or silkie chickens, which both are in the future. But we stopped at tractor supply one day, my boyfriend knows seeing the lil babies makes me smile. Guess it was a good day because he let me take two ducks home. I say "let me" because I complained like a child about what a good duck mom I'd be and how we should just take the plunge. We knew, still don't know much, about ducks, only from my mom raising and free ranging hens. We had no idea what breed we we're even getting. The lady freaked us out and told us we we're going to end up with muskovy if we bought the little yellow guys. After reading up on the breed, we were a little afraid of them turning mean. We now know that isn't always the case with that breed. We fell in love with our ducklings. We stuck them in our tub with some blankies that night and food and water. I woke up at 530 am because I was nervous about their first night. I played soft music, talked to them, spoiled them with treats. I let them in the kitchen with me while I cleaned. I thought their poops we're almost cute at the time, we we're fine with it. They eventually started following me. I would take naps with them. We got them a big Tupperware tub and would get them out throughout the day. Even had my sister babysit them! We drove an hour and half to my sister's for her to watch them over night. My neice loved them and read to them! I'll post that picture below. We started to figure out we had Pekins after about two weeks. A week later we we're getting mealworms and I saw a little brown duck all by it's self. Of course I had to have him. So I tried to pick one he was snuggling and brought those two home. We still have no coop, but they are getting HUGE. At least the Pekins are, so right now they go in the garage at night in a fenced area. I let them in a fence outside during the day and free range under my supervision. I'm still afraid of the Hawks during the day. Anyway, I wanted to share my duck journey and I'll be posting pictures/stories. If anyone has any tips, I would much appreciate it! We love our ducks and just want the best for them.
