My ducks are duds.

If that is a drake its a very young one, how long have you had them, do they hiss or make peeping noises?

Definitely four males. I should have posted a pic of them next to the females, it is quite obvious then.

Looks like he maybe about the same age as my young drake from this year 4 months on Sept 28th, he isn't even trying to mate the ducks, any drakes I've hatched one year don't mate till following year. What's the reason for not wanting to keep them?

After reading these responses I do believe that they are just very young males. The feathers on the head, the not mating...and they also seem to really be learning things. The reason I don't want to keep all four males is my ratio would be 4:5 females.


UPDATE: They DID go swimming! I've just not been patient enough. In addition to these nine muscovy's I also have one embden goose. I purchased them all together. The goose is the "leader" of the flock. He kindda keeps them all in line and herds them around the property. I've notice the ducks getting more interested in craning their necks out to watch the water, but the goose keeps them at a safe distance. Three days ago the females had had enough and literally bullied their way past Goose and into the water. It was so cute! The splashing and the head dipping and the wing flapping. Anyway...so today I see all of the ducks swimming around and Goose is walking the perimeter of the pond following them and he looks lonely and sad. He even give out a half-hearted Honk. They all swim/walk to the beach area and the ducks just sit there and (I believe) silently encourage Goose to join them. He slooowly enters the water and sits for a few mintues. The ducks are all staying close to him. Finally he creeps out into the deeper water and swims along the edge of the pond, all the while surrounded by the ducks. It was so cool how they worked together to reassure Goose that it was safe. They all exited, foraged around for awhile, and re-enter the pond three more times. I am so proud of my little flock. It was also cute how tired they were at the end of the day. They all went to their coop earlier than usual.

Ducks of any breed take to time adjust to new things, when i introduced a new trough my Muscovy flock stared at it for a bit before even attempting a swim lol

I agree with ML that is a young bird and barely even getting into the whole breeding aspect and if your females are of the same aging you'"ll likely not seen them lay till next year(there seasonal layers, and don't start till 4-8mths range, averaging 5-6mths but if that falls late in the season it will not happen that year)

Good luck with the sale of the extra drakes, usually in time they do sell, I have some extras here myself but have decided to winter them to keep warmth up in my barn and re-evaluate in spring. Having them free range does reduce some of the pressure/tension of having a high ratio.
