My EE rooster was doing the nasty

It seems that they sense when it is almost time. Our Buff Catalana rooster started mating with our Buff Catalana hens ONLY about 3 weeks before they started laying. He never tried to do it with any of the other hens. That was 2 months ago, and even now, the Polish only try to mate with those Buff Catalanas (poor girls are missing some feathers from the backs of their heads now). I noticed about 6 weeks ago that my white Ameraucana was practically begging the Brown-Red Ameraucana to mate with her. He wouldn't though (he was obsessed with another hen at the time). She finally started laying yesterday at 27 1/2 weeks.

After my RIR rooster started "enamoring" the RIR hens it was bad at first but now if I'm not watching them you wouldn't know they were doing it. It's funny watching the EE go after the RIR hens and the RIR rooster stops him before he starts.

My stupid roo is going into the pot. He is attacking the ladies, and i can't spray him with the hose every time, since i actually have a life. I can't just let him rape them all the time, so he is spending a lot of time alone (he escapes frequently though), and i am just trying to figure out how exactly to dispatch him... i'm a vegetarian with a meat eating (but squeamish) DH....

What you describe as attacking, may actually just be the rooster doing what he does best...mating. It's not real pretty until the rooster gets the hang of it and the hens mature enough to be receptive. Once everyone's on the same page it's actually over very quickly (literally 5 seconds) and if you have your back turned you won't even know it's happening.

My boys have been really "fond" of the girls for a few weeks now I have noticed, if ya know what I mean

. No one has laid an egg yet as far as I know.

But 2 days ago, I foud a tiny little egg in the nesting box. MY OE banties lay an egg a bit bigger than this tiny one.

The Silkie/Cochins are about 18 weeks old . I am wondering if that is to young yet? or if that is a sign that the girls will be laying soon too?

Do all chickens lay around the same age? or do different breeds lay at different ages?

Ginbart.....your EE girl is beautiful!

It's very much like human teenage girls. They don't all "start" at the same age either.

She is indeed pretty; she looks just like our EE! I see this color and feathering quite a bit on BYC. I wonder if this could be the EE standard coloring if they ever stabilize the genetics enough to qualify them as a breed.

My rooster grabs my 15 week old hens by the neck, yanks em to the ground holds em down with his feet and lets em have it... poor little hens screamin the whole time,,
My rooster should be prosecuted !!!
