My chickens are just 6 months old and one of them has started laying this week. Today I checked and it looks like another hen gave us an egg because it is in a different spot but also it had a paper thin shell that was torn. Is this normal?

It's not uncommon, when they start laying it takes some, some time to get it right. Make sure you're providing lots of oyster shell free choice for them, and it wouldn't hurt boost your protein for a few days as well. Crushed up hard boiled eggs are good as are a number of other choices.

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

I agree that it is a normal hiccup of the reproductive system starting or shutting down for young birds or those entering molt and such... presuming you are providing layer feed or oyster shell on the side you shouldn't have anything to worry about. And it is NOT currently a sign of deficiency but just part of the shell gland getting caught up. :)

Congrats on your eggs! :wee
