My Emu Incubating Thread (First time incubating Anything in my life)

B Wiggled this morning!!!

So A,B, C and E all wiggled! D sits flat on its axis (D FOR DUD? )

F leans down, husband said he thinks there's a chick in there, but no movement yet.

Weighed the eggs again this morning. Am currently still worried about A and B (which are now wiggling, adding to my concerns - I want them to make it out alive!!)

A- still 11g behind in weight loss. That's so much!! It was 602 and now it is 555, but needs to be 529 to reach 12% weight loss.
B- still 8 grams behind in weight loss :( IT was 602 also, currently at 551, and needs to meet 529 to get 12% weight loss.

The others are well on track, nearly 15% weight loss for all.

A and B are incubating at a lower temperature, closer to 95, so they may have longer hatching time, closer to 60 days. That still only gives me another 16-20 days to fix this weight issue. They are losing about 1.2 a day I think, and they need to be losing at least 1.3 from my calculations to catch up.

I put them both on the 'moisture sucker' packet and will re-weigh tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I plan to replace this moisture sucker with a fresh one and place A and B on the new one and possible with silica packs on top.

A and B lost 3g overnight! I'm happy! Sadly some of the others lost as much too.. Which I suspected would happen, given the effectiveness of this ''moisture grabber'' packet. I have the window open in the incubator room, and got lots of fresh air into the bator this morning. I took F and D out (non wigglers) and whistled to them. No movement. I suspect neither are alive at this point, but I have more doubts about D than F. I could've sworn I saw D move a little, but I think my eyes were just playing tricks on me. Who knows. Or, E was wiggling and touched D and hence made D move. lol

Anyway, I kept the moisture grabber in there, but tomorrow if I weigh them and the others are losing weight too fast, I will remove it. I just want A and B to catch up a bit to where they need to be!

Day 41 today. Wow. I can't believe they might hatch in 9+ days!!!
My guess is that E will be first, since he's closest in weight to where he needs to be, and along with D and F, he's incubating at a higher temperature.

A, B and C are all 95 range, so they should be closer to 55 day mark I assume. Which would be around July 11.

Glad to hear some are moving. I wouldn't be to concern about the weight loss of A and B, since they're incubating at a lower temperature, it is normal that they «dry» slower. In fact the humidity grabber may foul you by removing humidity too fast. To my understanding, egg should «dry» totally, I mean from the inside, the moister grabber by being to fast may dry the surface only... just a thought! Mine, let's call them 354, 355, 356, are all moving, 355 isn't moving as much as the other but I'm confident. My weight lost is right on track since the beginning, tomorrow night is the weight night... day 42. Keep the faith, we're gonna have baby emus!!!

Thanks Roch :)
I am worried because if A and B keep losing so slow, they will only lose 10% which is a 'danger zone' egg. and with so little time before hatch, I have to do something to speed them up. I hope I'm making a good choice here with this decision. I will remove the moisture grabber tomorrow. Husband said the fast weight loss is ok as long as they have lots of fresh air (suddenly he's an emu expert lol ) Idk. we'll see!!

Good evening, well I just weighted my eggs, all are on target, after 6 weeks, they lost 13% of there weight, so I can suppose that after 7 weeks they should be right on the magic 15%... 354 and 355 are really moving, 356 didn't move but the game isn't over yet! For yours A and B, try to move them closer to the fan if you can. One week to go before the final stage, I ordered starter chick food today. It's getting real. We keep our fingers crossed.:jumpy

Exciting, ours are basically right after each other. I have eggs in the #340s I believe.
I don't know if my incubator has a fan? It's a cabinet incubator. Or maybe I'm just stupid. The bottom shelf is a different temp than the top, and that's why I've never opted to shuffle them around.

Okay so exciting update, I heard E scratching around in there today!
I've been searching relentlessly for information to my questions, and I'm not getting a clear answer. When to stop turning for eggs that are incubating closer to 95? Surely not day 49 as that would be approx six days before hatch? I think I will keep turning them into the early days 50+. I am stopping turning E now, it's day 48. I let him roll where he wants to sit and that is kinda on his side. He immediately became more active when I put him back in the bator like that. I tapped and whistled to him, and I feel really good about it, like he might hatch in the next couple days! The wiggling has definitely become more aggressive in A and B also. C is wiggling about the same.

I put D for Dud (hasn't moved or leaned or done anything) at the bottom of the bator and left F beside E but moved it away. F hasn't done anything either, but was leaning. I wanted to give more room to E instead of being squished up against the other eggs and not being able to roll around if needed. I hope I'm making good decisions here!!

As far as the weight loss scare, A is now at 10.29% weight loss, and B is almost out of the danger zone at 11.29%. E is nearly at 16% because of the drastic methods I had to use to get A/B caught up. I still have another 6-7 days to get A close to 12% and I think I will be able to do it. Still lowkey cursing husband for not catching this back in early june when I went on vacation!

I have to work tonight and tomorrow morning and I'm so scared I'll miss the action!!!
I already spoke to my boss and explained that because E is probably going to hatch days before A/B and C he might be lonely and is it okay if I bring my baby emu to work? haha he said he wouldn't be here so... essentially I got the go-ahead. It's just a small store, I can keep him behind the til. Okay I'm counting my emus before they hatch again, I should stop that.

Eeeee!! I even had a dream last night that three hatched! But, because it was a dream, they turned into Pekin ducks instead of emus. lol

Oh wow, It's so exciting to see them move, there's life inside!!! 50 days today. I decided to stop turning them, i'm incubating at 97,5, so it's time to let them rest before the BIG work. 354 and 356 are really moving, I'm afraid 355 won't make it, it is colder than the other, but 2 out of 3 would be just great. Hope they'll hatch this week end. I'll keep you inform.

lol it's day 50 here too!
E is moving around a LOT. I wish he'd just hurry up already, haha! I keep encouraging him a lot, opening the bater often and whistling, tapping to him, and saying c'mon baby!!

I stopped turning him halfway through day 48. The rest I am still turning, I guess until day 52 or so? Since they're supposed to hatch closer to 55-58 days?

My understanding is that turning isn't as important at this stage, it's to keep them from sticking to one side as they're developing? I don't know. I am hoping for the best for your hatch too, keep me posted!
