It takes a while before they turn brown and even then they last a good long time. They hold together real good . I make piles of them and shove hay down all in there and throw it all over top. I like this because you make the piles as big as you want ,put them where you want and they look natural. The birds really feel safe. They can get way up in there or nest on the fringes. I also throw a few boughs over my various ground boxes. In my opinion you cant have too much cover for breeding. I use about three square bales of hay and three truckloads of cedar branches in the big pen. Ill try to remember to post pics when I start putting them in the pens to show everyone.
