I've been in this little town for 5 years now. Last year I took my youngest daughter to see the cattle drive for the first time. Every year there's a festival with a cattle drive. NEVER will I ever do that again. We almost got run over by them. I thought we had a good spot to sit and watch until several at the blink of an eye peeled off and bolted down an alley at the end of the row of benches we were sitting on. We were sitting on the benches with a wide sidewalk in front of us and a row of parked cars in front of that, then the street where they came through. I can't believe there were no bystanders injured by run away cattle and the cowboys on horseback chasing after them. It was a terrifying experience. So terrifying that seeing a half dozen cattle run through a bank drive through wasn't nearly as funny as it sounds.
Those pictures are awesome! I'm going to my first cattle drive in a few weeks. My 10 yo grandson is going to help the big guys with his horse for the first time. They are Texas Longhorns as well but they only have to drive them about a mile or so from one pasture down the road to another for branding and castrating the young bulls. Then it's a huge cookout and fun for the rest of the day. I can't wait!

Oh enjoy yourselves. I hope everyone has a good time.
SarahBeth9394 I know that was terrifying for you. I think a roof top view might have been a better way to go. I do know the fear though. When I was a little girl in Oklahoma my great grandfather owned a huge dairy. My friend who was a daugher of one of his hands and I got into a lot of trouble one week. I started my own stampede. I think I was more terrified after my grandfather gave us the lecture of our lives though. Still after we were both allowed out of our beds, we climbed into a pen with a "Baby Bull" as we called him. Could lie about that with bloody hoove marks on our legs. We were luck we didn't get killed in there and it was just out 4 year old legs and not our heads.
My best experience with cattle before that was letting a real young calf suck on my fingers and petting it. I see cows everday and the only time I'd ever seen them run out here is little calves playing. And those ladies that were sitting on the benches were years older than us and grew up in this cow country. Also I didn't think they would be driving full grown cattle that had that much energy in them as this was the tail end of the drive. Then there's the fact that they were surrounded by cowboys on horseback who've been doing this for years. I had no idea what could happen because this wasn't Pampaloma Spain and the running of the bulls. I still love cows but I have much more respect for them now.
If we go to the festival next year we will be leaving before they bring in the cattle.
Same day I did all the other stuff I also turned a calf loose that was across the river from his momma. Men on horseback went in after him when he tried to swin to the other side where she was mooing up a storm. I thought I was helping and that his momma left him there since he was tied up. Yep, that was our first little episode and we continued on through the day. I'm lucky to be alive. My grandpa could have beat the snot out of me. LOL
