I went to the feed store yesterday, knowing that they were getting in new chicks yesterday for the first time in a few weeks.

They order from Privett Hatchery, as it's right here in New Mexico. I was expecting to get "sensible" layers like australorps or red sex-links. But when I saw the variety that they had, I couldn't get any plain ol' layers. I was bad and gave in to foo foo chickens.

They'd better lay some eggs, at least...

I got 6 blue wyandottes!

I never thought they'd have those, and I'm so excited! Blue is my favorite color of chickens.

I got 6 "giant" cochins.

I do hope they turn out to be giant, but I'll be surprised if they are. I think 3 are splash. Two are either black or blue, but I'm leaning toward black. And one is buff.

I got 2 light brahmas.

I've never had brahmas, and I just love the columbian pattern. So we'll see how they do. One has a big black spot on top of her head, and the other has a pencil point spot on her head. Both are starting to get a bit of dark in their first little wing feathers. Do head spots mean anything as far as adult coloring?

Also, does anyone have pics of these breeds from Privett that they've gotten? THANKS!

I got these because... well, mostly because I'm a chicken addict. But I've got 3 eggs that should hatch today under a broody, and I want to hand raise them, so I'm hoping to swap out some of these chicks for the mama hen to raise after all her hard work. My babies (hopefully) hatching today are b/b/s bantam cochins from Little Ameraucana Mom. Their parents are BEAUTIFUL!

Also because it's spring and I've got chick fever. It happens every year. I wonder if there's a vaccination against this disease?

I LOVED my GLW. She was my hubby's favorite, and so beautiful. I never figured out how regularly she laid though, as my hens free range and I've got a lot of them. She was taken by a predator this year, though.

I have 5 year old Blue Wyandotte hens from Privett Hatchery and they are beautiful. I love the Blue color too! They are regular layers of a smaller egg, medium brown in color and are great Broodies!! Also, they are very fluffy, easy going and friendly. I would post pictures but I'm new to BYC and don't know how?

Why is it that if there's an unpopular or uncommon breed sold at a hatchery, people automatically fear it doesn't lay enough eggs, so they usually don't get it?

If it came from a hatchery, it will lay PLENTY eggs. . . Otherwise the hatchery wouldn't breed and sell it.

My Polish of all breeds lay an egg every day.

Anyway. . . Adorable chicks, and great to see they have something different. Our feedstore also gets its stock from Privett Hatchery, but we usually just get the typical BRs, BAs, and Sex Links, then as the weeks go on, they move on to "rare breeds" as well as RIRs, BOs, and Easter Eggers.

See up at the top of this page there is a blue bar with links? One says "uploads." Click on that, and it will open a window with a browse button where you can find pictures on your computer to upload. Click the "resize" box, and in the drop-down menu choose 640x480. Then upload them. When it's done, there will be two links below the picture. Copy the second one and paste it into the body of the message where you want the picture to appear.

I wanna see your girls! Please post...

Well, here's the list from Sandhill Preservation of which of THEIR birds lay the most eggs, in order from most eggs laid to least. Standard cochins are in the middle to bottom half, as are light brahmas. They don't have blue wyandottes, but they're not the best layers. Not like sex-links or white leghorns or australorps.
