my fiance just found a rooster on the side of the road... *now w/PICS*

my fiance just found a rooster on the side of the highway... he said he looked like an RIR roo...

he's still in the truck, heading back to the shop (we're at work)...

he mentioned that the roo's comb looked "burnt"... i'm assuming that means like the end is blackened... what does that mean, again and how can we help him? i know i've seen pics of that kind of thing...

they already had him drinking some water (he was super dehydrated)... i'm about to run out to southern states (less than a 1/4 of a mile away) to get some food...

any suggestions? i know pics would be helpful, but i haven't even seen the bird myself...

You could add some extra vitamins to his water to help him get better.

Quarantine first! Be sure to keep him very far away from your other chickens for no less than 30 days to watch for diseases. There's a thread on BYC today re quarantine as well as others if you do a search. Give him plenty of water (you can even put a little Gatorade in it), layer feed, scrambled eggs for protein and strength and even some plain yogurt. His comb might be black due to fighting with another roo or some other animal. Those are just some of my humble suggestions.

glad you found him. i dont know what the black tips on the comb mean if that is what it is. i think giving him water was the best thing, for the time being i would just keep him from stressing out. putting him in a place w/o much commotion. maybe some gatorade...electrolites couldn't hurt at this point. wish i could be more help and best of luck

we're definitely going to quarantine... we have a nice and healthy little flock and we intend on keeping it that way...

i hope we will be able to identify that the blackening of the comb is just some frostbite from last winter and nothing more serious...

here is the poor rooster! beak clipped, missing an eye and possibly a wattle, and a blackened comb... either NHR or RIR... no idea of age/etc. now that i see the chicken, i believe it to be a hen...

Ohhhh, the poor thing-yeah, it looks like a hen to me also. Kudos to your df for picking her up! Good luck with her and hope she gets better soon.
