My first 15 are coming soon! Some Qs...

My just hatched chick with Meyer hatchery chicks (2 days old) My hatched chick is heavy compared to them, but they prolly lost 2 days body weight in shipment.

I have the Premier 1 heat plate and nipple waterers and so far I love them. My birds arrived yesterday. The only bummer with the plate is trying to balance not stressing them by lifting it with wanting to check on them lol. I didn't show anyone the waterers; they beat me to it. They seem to really like it actually, like it's half hydration and half game. I did lose one last night and one more today (out of 42) so they do now have NutriDrench in the water. I was thinking along a lot of the same lines you seem to be but now that I've lost 2 I'm totally focused on getting everyone strong and healthy on their good basic diet, indoors. They're in my garage in a giant dog crate lined with cardboard for now.

I'm so sorry about the 2 you lost.
I know we should be expecting it with chicks and chickens but it's still sad...

Do you think they have enough space in the giant crate, and under the heat plate? I'm not familiar with that brand but 40ish is a lot of birds! Lol

They do for now. I got the biggest heat plate, and the crate is a 54" great Dane crate. I have so much dog stuff... Next I plan to join a 48" crate to the 54" so they can use both, and eventually we may graduate to ex pens. It's surprising to me how spacious it is under the plate even at night when they all go under it, but I'm prepared to get a second one if needed. It's warming up so it's a race between growth, feathering, and the arrival of summer weather! And thanks. I'm with you. I'm a farmer and I get it but I don't have to like it when critters die.

Here is the chick I hatched yesterday, I am going to call her "Val" for prince Valiant, because that is what her hair looks like.

She has a V on her forehead.

I have a 6 week old Brahma chick that was taking care of 3 BCM chicks that were 4 weeks old. Now i just gave her just shipped chicks 3 red Frypan bargain. She loves them, and the 4 week old BCM chicks are treating them nicely.

My other fresh shipped chicks I have 2 boxes with a view window between, active chicks and less active chicks...

I gave the 3 red chicks to the brahma because they were super active.

Also...
We failed at TSC
Needed to get food and some grit in preparation for the Mighty 15's arrival next week, aaaaannd....
We came out of the store with 5 unplanned babies in a box! LOL

We got 2 RIR, 2 Black sex links, and one Golden Comet. Hopefully they'll all get along once the PLANNED babies arrive.

Anyway! We quickly set up the Mama Heating Pad and food and water for them, and they all ate (didn't see them drink) and then started trying to duck under each other, so I tucked them under the heating pad and they all chirped happily and then went to sleep <3

So I still can't wait for the Monday Babies but sooo glad these girls are here!

Who else has failed at TSC
