my dad used to have chickens when he was little and he said they fed them crumbled laying mash and sugar water snd they just had a reagular heat lamp over them and they turned out fine so he has setup the brooder for me

Patrick, could you please clarify just how many hatched and when? How many eggs did you start with and what kind? What day are they on and did they all go in on the same day?

I am confused by your posts of morning, afternoon and evening hatchings.

We all want to help, but perhaps you should ask your Dad, who has raised chicks and set up the brooder for you, since he is there and we aren't.

ok to get things straight i started with 35 we pulled 9 out after candling. yesterday was hatch day we had one hatch this morning about 4 am and one hatch about 8 pm tonight. but he was stuck so we had to help him a little if this is not clear enough let me know and i will try again thanks

good news i have 1 chick in the brooder and 1 in the incubator drying off and 2 more eggs have pipped. i have read all the post and links on how to care for baby chicks and i think i have it all right now i will have pictures of the chicks asap but my mom wants to wait until they all hatch

Patrick,
The only thing I would add to this advice is use warm water to dip their beaks when you transfer them. Cold water can shock their system.

Good luck

ok i woke up this morning to two pipping and one hatched and come home from school and found 2 out 1 dead in shell and another pipped and the hatch day was 2-24-10 is it bad that they keep hatching late

depending on your humidity and temperature, you could have had the eggs be slow to start developing or, they may have stopped and started back up. Are you counting from day of lay or day you put them in the incubator. That too can make a difference.

as long as they are still hatching, let them.
