My first batch of CX done: The Results

That is a great system. I recently have a wood chips connection. Before that I was getting bales at the store. Grass worked better for us. Meaties were higher maintenance then the egg chickens for sure. We are putting woodchips into the egg chickens pen and coop and it is working well.

My first batch of chickens went to the butchers this morning. Had 8 of the 10 survive. 2 died when the weather reached 103-104. Not sure of the weights. Ill wait till tomorrow to report. Bad thing is, my freezer wont be here till wednesday. I would have like to watch the process to see if its something I could do, but my schedule didnt allow it.

Check with your processor to make sure. We sat ours for two days and they were perfect. Three days is too long. Too short of a time and I hear they are tough.

Got the processed chickens back today. The butcher didnt give me live weight just dressed weights which were allover 6lbs but under 7 and a half pounds. Since this was my first batch, is that good?

Those are some pretty big chickens. How old were they and what did you feed them? Were they out on grass or in a coop?
Just over 10 weeks. We made some errors on the feed which caused me to go over the usual 6-7 week terms for them. The local feed store gave my wife chick starter for several weeks and then a layer food instead of a meat chicken food. We brought the chickens in at around 7 weeks and they were much to small. We switched to a high protein food for the next three weeks and they tripled in size. Fed them 24/7. Our second batc should go much smoother.
