Yes, I agree, 50 years of having chickens is surely enough time to have figured out what is successful, and what's not.
Based on your experience of waiting 24 hours to move them, my chick didn't survive that 24 hours wait period, with no protection from rooster. Only remains found were little pieces of shell found on bottom of nesting box.
I do understand that this whole chicken hobby is different for everyone. It seems a lot of people on here have differing opinions. Some say yes while others say no. And there's sadness that come with every choice that leads in a failed attempt, or in an unsuccessful situation where someone previously stated it should work.
I'm hoping to someday, be able to have a broody hen successfully hatch chicks, and to share my experience with everyone here. After all, that's what we are all here for
