This is going to be my ongoing coop build thread with all successes and failures documented for posterity and to try to help out others like me...

My wife and I moved back home to San Diego from Ecuador at the beginning of summer and after our tenants vacated our rental property at the beginning of August we decided to do a little bit of work to the place so we could move out of my Mother-in-Law's house by mid-September.

I organic garden, vermicompost, pile compost etc.. I used to work on the educational side of all that now I actually enjoy it:D

I have always wanted to raise chickens and we now have some space. We are allowed 5 hens by law here and despite my wife's love of small, fluffy animals I plan to keep our flock at, or near 5!

My plan is to build something similar in design to this:

I rented a Ditch Witch from Home Depot to install irrigation in our front yard and took the time to carve a 12" trench for the foundation for the coop/run. I hope it keeps out the diggers!

Like all remodels, we hoped to move in mid-September, we ended up gutting the house, replacing all the electrical, plumbing and drywall on the inside of the exterior walls. We installed HVAC and as there was no insulation in the walls we had to gut it, so we also insulated and drywalled the ceilings, so why not gut the kitchen, new cabinets, move the laundry and water heater out of the kitchen to the garage...

We hope to move in before Halloween!!!:D

Cool! I am going to get chickens! my dad and I are going to build a coop!

I have spent the past year reading everything about everything chicken here. I know nothing about chicken coops nor chickens but I am hoping to do things right the first time!
