I have 1 Golden Comet, 2 BRs, and 1 BO. I purchased the first three at the January Chicken Swap at 4 weeks old and the BO about a month ago at 3 months old. I went out to the coop and noticed one of the egg doors open. It was probably left open by my curious daughter so I shut it and just out of habit I checked the second door. I could't believe my eyes!

I saw a perfect little brown egg sitting there. I ran to the house and squealed "WE HAVE OUR FIRST EGG, OUR FIRST EGG!"

My daughter (5-years-old) and I did a happy dance in the kitchen. I then decided to crack it and cook it. The shell was the perfect hardness and the yolk (yes, I was delighted to see it had a yolk!) was the perfect dark color. We all shared it and talked about how it was the most delicious egg we have ever had!.

I feel vindicated because I did extensive research to come up with my feed mixture. We are not sure which hen it was but we will be watching closely. I am so excited!

Congrats!!! I'm still waiting on my first egg out of this years hatch... They're not due to start laying until the end of this month but I'm still just an impatient mama.

Congratulations! The first egg is so exciting. And even though I'm regularly getting a dozen or more eggs each day now, it's still exciting to gather the eggs each day.

If you don't mind sharing, what is your feed formula?

Three of my girls were supposed to have hatched in December, but I have a suspicion that one is little bigger than the others and may be a little older. I think she is the one that left us our gift but I can't be certain. I have heard that BRs don't lay for 5-6 months. One of my girls is a Golden Comet and I had expected her to be the first one to lay. I don't know but I am very happy!

Hi, I have buff Orps and they lay a tan pinkish egg...does this help? I suspect the golden comet will lay a speckled egg not sure but I think so.....anyone have golden comets, mine is only 7 weeks old...am so happy for you, I just love my chickens....

Kingsfarm, what you said does make sense. Usually only my Buff likes to sit the box where I found the tan, pinkish egg and she is the most agreeable. But I found Barred Rock feathers in the box and they don't usually sit down there.

I caught the Golden Comet sitting in her favorite box a couple of times today which is unusual for her. Ever since I found the first egg in the box I walk the yard several times a day looking for eggs and found the egg outside in one of their sitting holes. So I think I am pretty sure that the Golden Comet layed that very pretty dark egg with speckles on it. I was so thrilled with the color. I guess it doesn't really matter who layed what as both eggs had nice dark yolks and hard shells. The second egg shell was even harder than the first and I have not yet started giving them any additional calcium. Really glad about the variation of color though and I am thankful that at least two have started laying. I would expect the other two to not be too far behind. It has been a long wait. Wish I could tell them how grateful I am.
