My first every farm fresh egg laid today soo excited but now what??

My chickens are approx. 3 months old and one of my red sex hen laid her/my first egg every. two days ago my husband observed my rooster "mating" with one of the red sex hens, then today I have an egg is there anyway to tell, if this is a fertile egg?? without breaking it, I want baby chicks!! and what do I do now? do I put it one of those egg hatching things, do I wait and see if she does it on her own? and if it has been fertilized how long will it take to hatch. Sorry so many questions I'm just so excited!!

If the rooster is doing the deed, it is a safe assumption that the eggs will be fertile. If your hens are red sex links, the chances that they will go broody are minimal. You might want to get one of those ' egg hatching things'. Look for an incubator when you are trying to locate one of them. Chicken eggs take around 21 days to hatch. Why not have this one for breakfast?

Seriously, many people are reluctant to hatch pullet eggs because of their relatively small size. Let your hens lay for a bit and then collect a batch to incubate. Congratulations!

What is broody? I have always wanted to start a little family farm, but I was raised in an area where it wasn't allowed. The most you could have there was a dog, and on a leash or else, lol!! I am so excited to be starting our family farm, and besides dog peanut which I've had 7 years now, I am starting our farm with the chickens we purchased not to long ago!! and we know nothing absolutely nothing!! This is all new we just got married a year ago June 10Th and purchased our home last October, and chickens came in march and so did our daughter!! So everything is new to us, Marriage, Home, Family, and we are learning and enjoying so much of it!! I know I probably sound stupid, but I believe asking questions is my best bet to success and whats a better way to find out, everyone starts somewhere and doing it right and asking for advice from a more experienced person is always key!!!
 
A hen is broody when she will set and incubate the eggs. Not all hens will go broody, and some breeds are far more likely to go broody than others. Question away - that's what many of us are here for. I love your enthusiasm.
