I love how you think, Mygirls20! We are trying the self sustaining thing. Chickens are a great start - so educational for the kids!
Apparently, I read somewhere, there's a new cow breed in India that's real small, that they use for milk. Can't remember the breed, but somebody is working on bringing some to the U.S.
I can't drink cow's milk, (only 3 of us here) so in researching, I found grocery store goat milk to be absolutely horrendous!!! The trick is to find FRESH (not older than 5 days, at 7 days starts to goaty!) milk at a farm gate. In Canada, fresh goat milk cannot be sold to public, unless it is sold at the farm. Store goat milk must be pasteurized, which breaks down the key elements that makes goat milk taste like cow milk.
Fresh goat milk is AWESOME, & more nutritious! It's a tad bit fattier, but should never taste like liquid billy goat! It is said that goat milk is also easier on the human body to digest. I can vouch for that!
Goats are social animals, so you shouldn't get just one. If you breed your own on your farm, keep billy goat as far from the milking girls as possible (when not breeding)! Better yet, find a farmer who has a billy goat he can lend you at his/her farm. Billies should be kept with another, but castrated, male for companionship.
I do go on, perhaps you can pm me for any more info, or check on the forum. I've done a lot of research, but have no practical experience yet. Can't wait, I hear goats are a blast! Their antics are pretty amusing, as you can see from the video! Too cute!
Darn it, that's a smart fox all right! You have your work cut out for you! Don't despair, you just have to change your tactics. Flamethrower, reach out & touch someone! Lol! Seriously though, check some predator hunting websites for some tips. I think you maxed out the use of the trap on this one. Where there's a will, there's a way! Got camo? Maybe set up an ambush with your gun, wind in your face. Make squeaky noises on your hand. Do you know around time of day he visits? Mine would come around anytime between 9:00 & 3:00 p.m. in warmer months. Usually midday. Brazen buggers! Anywho, best of luck to you! Keep at em!
