My first Fox attack that ended in a kill

Put a piece of chicken under the trigger plate.
so I took a raw chicken breast (from the store) and cut it into 6 pieces making a trail to the live trap (placing a piece at the entrance and another piece halfway in) hoping at that point the dead full chicken would be to tempting.... The fox ate all the pieces including the ones inside the trap but never touched the chicken. so the trap didnt even go off. This fox is totally F****** with me. I am so mad!!!!

Fox prolly knows what the trigger is - they are clever.. You may need that motion sensor flame thrower!

Any roo will do okay with your chickens - right, chicks will be mutts, not mutants. What do you want from future chicks? Layers? Consider Leghorn or rir or a roo from a great laying breed. If you want meat, get a meat roo like a Cornish .- not Cornish cross, the regular Cornish. Or any of many dual purpose breeds that make more meaty birds.

Our Leghorns just started laying - we're happy with them, our others are more for fun - Seramas - which are tiny and friendly, like pets.

Dorkings, mentioned above, are one of the best tasting chickens but grow slowly, as do ,any breeds. Nothing you raise will look like a plump supermarket chicken unless you buy jumbo Cornish rock cross chicks, which can be slaughtered at 6 to 8 weeks, full size - they grow crazy fast - no hormones - just weird genes. But you have to buy these - you can't breed them - their offspring won't breed true - weird hybrid genetics stuff.

Some chickens will look more like pheasant carcass, dressed. Still tastes good tho.

I love how you think, Mygirls20! We are trying the self sustaining thing. Chickens are a great start - so educational for the kids!
Apparently, I read somewhere, there's a new cow breed in India that's real small, that they use for milk. Can't remember the breed, but somebody is working on bringing some to the U.S.
I can't drink cow's milk, (only 3 of us here) so in researching, I found grocery store goat milk to be absolutely horrendous!!! The trick is to find FRESH (not older than 5 days, at 7 days starts to goaty!) milk at a farm gate. In Canada, fresh goat milk cannot be sold to public, unless it is sold at the farm. Store goat milk must be pasteurized, which breaks down the key elements that makes goat milk taste like cow milk.
Fresh goat milk is AWESOME, & more nutritious! It's a tad bit fattier, but should never taste like liquid billy goat! It is said that goat milk is also easier on the human body to digest. I can vouch for that!
Goats are social animals, so you shouldn't get just one. If you breed your own on your farm, keep billy goat as far from the milking girls as possible (when not breeding)! Better yet, find a farmer who has a billy goat he can lend you at his/her farm. Billies should be kept with another, but castrated, male for companionship.
I do go on, perhaps you can pm me for any more info, or check on the forum. I've done a lot of research, but have no practical experience yet. Can't wait, I hear goats are a blast! Their antics are pretty amusing, as you can see from the video! Too cute!
Darn it, that's a smart fox all right! You have your work cut out for you! Don't despair, you just have to change your tactics. Flamethrower, reach out & touch someone! Lol! Seriously though, check some predator hunting websites for some tips. I think you maxed out the use of the trap on this one. Where there's a will, there's a way! Got camo? Maybe set up an ambush with your gun, wind in your face. Make squeaky noises on your hand. Do you know around time of day he visits? Mine would come around anytime between 9:00 & 3:00 p.m. in warmer months. Usually midday. Brazen buggers! Anywho, best of luck to you! Keep at em!

Ya I am going to do some more research on some roosters I think it would be fun to have some chicks. Plus not many people sell hens up here. I know I am not going to make a million bucks selling chicks. But I think ti would be fun to have people come out and pick out chicks they want :) Really thinking about that flame thrower now haha

Ya I want some goats. I do know someone that breeds goats he is suppose to call me when the babies are born so I can go look at them :D I think what I might have to do with the fox now is just put raw chicken out for him in a spot where I can get a good shot off. He is not scared of my security lights so I am going to place the meat there. Then once I get my gun and ammo I will just wait him out then this can all be over. I know its the same fox saw him last night he is still missing a patch of fur on his neck and has a limp from my dog getting him. Well out to go check the trap. I am just going to put it away if he is not in there. I know I am not going to be able to get him that way now. Ticks me off that Snow White (the chicken) didnt get her revenge in death blah!!!

What I found this morning. Raw chicken on trigger plate and under GONE. Dead chicken behind trigger plate GONE. I had it set on the lightest setting too. THIS IS FRICKEN INSANE!!! I dont understand.

This is my coop btw. The coop is covered with the red ply wood and I have a covered outdoor area for when the weather is crappy. Then a uncovered outdoor area you cant really see it but I have deer fencing on top so the hawks cant get in. I use those tarps for when it snows or the wind is blowing super hard.

I really hope that I have done enough with the chicken wire to keep that fox out till my .22 comes in. I need to think of a name for her ever gun has to have a name and it needs to be a girl name :)

Bastid! Now you gotta get sneaky. Put the opening like 18 inches away from a wall so he can't just back out quickly. And put bait only under the trip plate.
