My first Fox attack that ended in a kill

Mygirls, wow - frozen corn - you spoil your chickens! JK!

Watch iceberg lettuce - as you prolly know,it has almost no nutrition.. Other lettuces are great.

I trimmed fat off a roast this week - our birds love suet - in small amounts tho. In real cold you can feed more. Look into that - suet can be very cheap..
No kidding, I'm jealous of your ckns menu Mygirls20 LOL. I agree about greens and taste. I use hay in the winter, but you have to be real picky. I look for 2nd crop that dryed fast before bailing. This is greener and not so yellow in color. I do the same thing with the meat trimmings w/ my ckns (cut small and cooked because I'm a freak about parasites) they love it. Is anyone worried about too much protein causing a build up of uric acid (The waste product from protein metabolism.) resulting in gout that may affect ckns toes/feet or bumble foot?

Shellz it's not like that south of you. It really depends on the state & the agency, but we have zero trust in our authorities - or many of us do. Why our paranoia may be justified probably belongs on another site.

Fueling our fear is a massive shift in population to big cities and a spread of fanatical ideologies. Our government tends to grease the squeaky wheel, so tiny minorities sometimes ram through insane laws because - well, they paid & shouted for it and got it.. We're getting corrupt, and our officials are not all competent - and are acting less like civil SERVANTS & more like feudal barons.

Well, not all people here agree with that - but in a nutshell that's why I'm afraid & paranoid - and I do not trust my government at all.. There are many good people in it, God help them, but the trend is going bad.

We have a proud tradition of rebelling against tyranny, & civil disobedience is not just a right, it's seen by many as a duty. I don't mean bullheaded selfishness, either - I mean resisting when you know that this "one size fits all" bs they're pushing on us is wrong. The only reason we have any freedom is because of brave people who risk to keep it. Okay, I'll get off my stump now.:)

Gout from protein excess - well, our birds are under 1 year, so i' m not worrying yet. Will need to keep an eye on that. What are signs of chicken gout? We don't give em that much extra protein - and since they eat grass and feed , we figure the protein is needed to balance the grass content of diet. No freeze here in winter - so we got nice weeds and native grass to feed.

My father in law used to be in charge of his company's annual 4Th of July picnic. They always cooked one whole beef yearling and a gang of pigs or hogs. The also had goat and sheep
Bar-B-Que for the Eastern European immigrants working in the mine. When either goats or sheep were in short supply or unavailable, they cooked on or the other and no one ever figured it out.

I'm glad you got up on your stump Steemroo! I can better appreciate your perspective now. I understand corruption can happen in any institution, but for what ever reason, we haven't seen that in our provincial MNR. That's a real eye opener over there! Sorry if it seemed I was unsympathetic - it was my ignorance, & misunderstanding of your situation down there! Ok, let's move on shall we?

I guess gout could be a problem in the older birds. I know when I offer protein, I will add large flake oats, or rye in an amount that looks balanced for them.

Chickengeorgeto, IMO, protein is protein. Unless its gone bad, of course! I'm not that fussy. I would like to be able to never buy grocery store meat ever again. We're getting better, by purchasing our red meat & turkeys from a market that sells free range and no feedlots! Very tasty pork too. Nom, nom!

Get your self a 22 and shoot straight and take care of biss. And don't post a pic of the kill that could come back and bite you.Good luck I just lost a buff orp. The other day I let her out for an hour to free range and she was gone.if you could get intouch with a local trapper and put a leg hold set with your dead one if legal in your state.

Ya I already talked to a wildlife officer he told me to shoot it so I wont be getting in any trouble but thanks for the advice :)

So ya last night I made a special treat for the fox raw chicken covered in peanut butter then sprinkled dog food on it. I wired it to the trap (after I let it sit in the freezer for a little bit) We got a heavy wet snow last night it set off the trap bait still in there though and I found fresh tracks this morning :) so I am hoping to get him tonight. He was sitting on my porch this morning waiting for us to come back from the store ***!!! Also I got a box of ammo from a friend I am ready to go... Just need my gun waiting for the store to call me (hopefully in the next hour) so I can pick it up I AM SO EXCITED!!!!! I wont post a pic of the dead fox on a form dont want any tree hugging PETA hippies freaking out. God forbid people actually have to see how the real world works. Its kinda sad really that the human race is totally happy with the blinders on. Another reason why I want to have a small farm so my daughter know the way the real world works and see where our food comes from. :D

mygirls20,
Sorry to hear about your loss. I had a neighbors dog come in and get 6 of my girls over the space of about a month. I know that you would rather not kill the fox but rememeber that if you dont kill it it will find another coop to raid or eventually return and try again. as much as we hate it sometimes, the best thing is to kill the fox. If you relocate it, it becomes the next closest farmer of chicken owners nightmare. help everyone out and kill it. Foxes are not endangered. There are more foxes than you can kill so dont feel bad at all.

Sorry again for your loss

Well got him again just about 5 mins ago. Tomorrow I will pick up my .22 and it will all be over :( stupid fox. Kinda shocked I got him again its only been a few days since he was trapped last. stuck him in the garage so he doesnt get to cold we are suppose to get some snow tonight dont want to be mean to him.
