My first Fox attack that ended in a kill

I have hawks around, but (KnockOnWood) have not had any loses to them. I've even seen eagles flying over the branch/creek back in there. My birds seem to be really tuned in to airborne predators when they are out. They know what a hawk sounds like. They'll get under the coop, or hide in that clump of brush seen in the picture. I also have crows around and they, the crows, must have a certain call for hawks. Because I have seen the chickens respond to those calls the crows make. They'll pop their heads up and head for cover.

Well its good that they have somewhere to hide. Best of luck hope nothing ever happens to them. Nothing is worse then a dead chicken I was so happy everyone was finally laying almost everyday now they arent really laying as much hope when everything calms back down my eggs will go back up. This stupid fox is toying with me and I am not happy about it lol.

Shellz point is good -- calls are complex and don't all work, depending on place, time of year & the varmit. When I was a boy our coyotes were were so heavily hunted - they were forced to become very smart. Wouldn't ever come near a human or house,.. It's fun when calling works - do investigate it - and auto caller mentioned is not hard to use.. I'm going to check out that mirror YouTube, too.

I doubt fox will ever enter your live trap. Hope new fencing holds until you can blast it.. Fox may be wary of you now.

Anyway, since this is a problem (more foxes will appear later), do look into calling. You can get a sense of what is our there - it's fun, too, when it works. Also, there are raccoons, weasel family critters, and other varmits to worry about.. Strong fencing is your main line of defense. Foxes are good at digging, so watch out. Some people have to bury fencing for that - if it's a worry, I'd google it. If they're in a floored coop at night - should be good. Check every morning for signs of digging.

Foxes are cunning for sure! I plan never to leave the house without a gun, once my birds are free ranging again.
Had 1st hawk attack last year. All he got was feathers! Birds all hid in various shrubs. Found that bugger just sitting on ground in front of my window! Cheeky bas***d! I yelled at it, and he flew to a small dirt heap nearby. I ran up to it, & it didn't budge until I was several feet in front of it! I also have a pair of golden eagles here. Only see them once a year. One of them flew down & grabbed something off the trunk of a nearby tree. I was with my first flock of young ducks & couldn't believe this massive bird didn't want a nice, young duck instead! Pretty exciting stuff!
Nice Premiere fence, JackE! I'd like that when there's lots of bugs, but in fall, the birds like to go into the woods a bit for more bugs under the leaves.
Took me about 6 months to get all legal for gun ownership, but once you have your license, no more waiting! So I'm always excited to get a new gun. Think I have everything I need, but want a semi-auto. Maybe in a 22-250. Lol!

Thank you we will see what happens. I see a lot of porch time in my future once I pick up my gun... The hard part now is finding some ammo. I dont want to wait for shipping from a online store just hoping my gun store gets its order in soon. Also I found a really cool laser light scope was thinking about getting it doing some target practice so make sure that everything is perfect so my first shot will be true

I wonder...what about a cheap motion sensor where you know the fox goes - like near the baited trap.

Rig the wire to.your house, where it turns on a light or buzzer. That way at night, it would wake you to get your shot.

Now, tons could go wrong. Mice or wind moving leaves could wake you 18 times. Then, just disconnect at bedtime, giving you a chance at a shot from sunset to bedtime. I assume you have an outdoor light on all night to see it.

Well, another idea. May or may not be worth doing.

edit - also game cameras are getting cheap - they detect motion, & I think you could rig one to show on a screen in your house. High tech FTW!. Or a security camera.
