My first hatch with bargain's eggs - PICS ON PAGE 3

Quote:
To be positive there wasn't a live chick in the egg, I put the egg in water, if there's a chick and it moves, the water will make waves.

When you lay the eggs on their sides, they wobble a bit when the chick inside moves. You have to hold REAL still to see it.

The float test is done at the end of incubation. For instance, day 23 and all but a couple have hatched .... you can do the float test on those eggs. Do not do the float test during incubation.

Wobble: When you see the egg move, before hatching -- maybe 3 days before!

New2chooks: Sending good hatching vibes your way!

Good luck!

I only did it because I was almost positive it was a quitter. Would not have done it on one I knew had a chick in it. I just wanted to float it as an extra precaution before I chipped it open.

Thanks Kathy! I just bought another thermometer (oregon scientific) with a wire sensor. So I stuck it down one of the vent holes and got a reading of 100.4-101.3 at the top of the eggs. The other 2 thermometers are on the bator floor and they are measuring in the 98.2-98.9 range. So I guess it was never as low as I thought.

I'm assuming the top of the eggs is where you take the temperature? That's how I was doing it for 1-18 days. I just didn't want to stick the thermometer on top of eggs that are going to hatch soon. Should I adjust it more, or just leave it be?

Oh, and every now and then I hear a tapping sound coming from my bator. They couldn't be starting already, could they?

oh ok. i was just wondering cause i had seen those terms a few times and didnt know what they meant. Ive never had chickens or ducks, but am attempting to hatch duck eggs in my classroom. Ill have to try those methods after hatching just to make sure.

Thanks so much!!!!!! Praise the Lord we have babies! and I do mean that! I thank Him so much for the gift of life of these babies...

You are such a good mommy...Congrats!!!!

Have a blessed day....I know you've given me a very big smile!!!!!

My hatch is over.

I have 5 that hatched. 3 welsummers and 2 barred rocks.

One of the BR pulled too hard while hatching, and it looks like some of it's intestines were sticking out. I put a bandaid over it to keep the others from picking at it. It's doing fine this morning, but I don't think it will make it. I gave it a little drink since it's been a couple days since it pipped. The other BR is gummy, it hatched but it's yolk sac wasn't completely absorbed. It looks a lot more absorbed this morning, so I'm leaving it in the incubator for right now. (with the injured one)

The other 2 eggs never pipped and they were full term deaths. Probably my fault with the humidity issues I had when I started lockdown. Sucks to learn the hard way.

So 4 healthy babies, I'm happy with that for my first time.

You had an awesome hatch!!!! I'm so proud of you, my grandchicken's Mom!!!!

I've been lurking and lurking and finally now we know!!!

I know they are beautiful and please do post some photos....My bator's been empty too long and I must try to wait until January, but I know I cannot!!!!.....

Thanks for sharing this first hatch with all of us and I'm so honored to have been your first eggs hatched!!!!

Smiling widely and giggling happy, I am Granny Nancy....
