My first incubating experience

There was zero when I went to work this morning, and just checked. 2 pips! Hope they don't hatch till tomorrow.

I'm embarrassed to say it, but I'm not ready. My almost 5 week old chicks are still in the garage in the big brooder. It won't take long to put a cardboard box together though. Spring was supposed to be here over a month ago. I always thought having chickens in the house was not cool, and now I'm doing it twice in a row.

Well I checked on my eggs at 11:30 before picking up my DD. I came back and I finally have a external pip! Excited to say the least.

updates this morning?

We have 6 out so far.

Well we went to the drive in and came home about 2:30 and I had a little beak sticking out at me. It's trying to zip but hasn't gotten far. Another one is about half way zipped. That is about it so far. My daughter has a soccer game today so I'm hoping for some more action when I get home. I posted another thread because the first one is zipping in the middle of the egg and its peak is just sticking out. Everyone so far has said it was find and to relax. There are two more that I'm waiting to pip because there is still movement but I'm not holding my breath. I'd be happy with just two.

Congrats on the 6 new babies

Update, one little baby is out. The first one who pipped is making slow progress but tends to work a little harder when the one who is out chirps. No other ones have pipped yet. Still hopeful.

Last update for the night. The first to pip is still trying to slowly zip. Has made very small progress but still moving and chirping. The second to pip is out and bumping into things. We have a third pip and possibly a 4th but we can't really tell.

you can help the chick which is not able to get out of the egg, i my self helped two chicks to get out because it was clear that he is not sitting in the right way that allow him to zip the egg. if it took him more that 18 hrs or so i would directly help him. This is because sometimes the humidity in the egg was not be suitable and the chick have not sat well inside the egg ( his skin would still be sticking on the membrane... )

My first egg hatch this year ,was but together with a cardboard box and a lamp and 30 watt bulb.It took a few bulbs to get to hold the right heat but found it!I hatched about 80 % of the eggs i incubated this way, they are growing and very heathly.I have a few hens that hatched a few for me and it seems easier to let them do it but love watching them chicks grow in the egg,so i will probally get a incubator soon. One other thing i had 2 dollars invested in my hatch box and people and friends of mine say they spend 200$ on one and didnt have half the luck!

After having 2 hatch the last time I am trying again. This time I am using trying a dry hatch and have a new incubator. So far my eggs are on day one. I have 15 bantam chocolate orp eggs. I got a huge deal on Some ccl rggs and they are settling now and going into the incubator in the morning with the orps. Decided at lockdown to do the combined humidity. The room humidity + incubator humidity= 100%. Both of the other times my humidity was way too high. The surviving chick from. My second hatch had curled toes and took almost 3 days to dry. Did research and it was my humidity. I'm trying to stay out of the incubator for as long as possible to candle. Day 7 or 8 will be the first time I try, hopefully.
