I've looked thru some threads on prolapse, but still would like input or advice..

My columbian wyandotte, Dot:), She is the sweetest chick, my only white girl in the bunch, always seems to get bullied, low on the totem pole:(

Anyhow, yesterday noticed alot of poop on her butt feathers, but she's a fluffy girl, today I decided to do a 'butt' check, and she had prolapsed:( I don't think it's to bad but what do I know?

I brought her in, because as soon as the others saw that prolapse, they were on her like flies on chicken poop..Gave her a bath, clipped up her feathers, applied an antibiotic wash, then put vetericyn on it, and put prep H, it easily goes back in, sticks out maybe 1.5 inches if that, but seems to pop back out..

The thing is, on the prolapse part, there looks like to me, white clumpy stuff 'stuck' to the outer side of the prolapse, (does that make sense?),,I thought it might be poop, but it's not really coming off and I didn't want to "pick" it off.

She's eating/drinking fine, in fact you'd never really know anythng was wrong with her.

I've isolated her in my brooder and she's fine with that.

I notice she eats alot of oyster shell, (which I have available to them), and her eggs are sometimes 'pitted'..I'm assuming they are just like little calcium deposits.

Her crop seems ok, altho it's pm here, so it's rather full from eating. Her stools are ok, but somewhat 'hard' ..Normal???

They always have ACV in their water.

I plan on soaking her 3- 4 times a day, apply the vetericyn, prep h,

Should I be feeding her something other than her crumbles? Doing anything else?? Adding an antibiotic ? (I have duramycin here)...

I'll be keeping her isolated for awhile..Thanks for any input.

Should add she just turned 1 year old, has been laying well.

I do know those bumps on the eggs are calcium and nothing to worry about, as you thought. What you are doing sounds good to me, but then I'm no expert on prolapse, by a long shot. I have a couple of links I thought I'd share, though. One is on egg abnormalitles and their causes, which is a pretty thorough document. The other is an old BYC thread on prolapse that people wiser than I selected as a reference for the problem. It's linked in the stickies for Emergencies, and I'll give you the link here.

thank you so much for those links, very informative..Thankfully Dot's doesn't look as bad as most of those pics, no swelling, no blood, just a red piece sticking out..it's actually better tonite, but I'll continue to isolate her for a few days, and think I'll try the honey as well as the prep H, bathing, etc.

She's such a sweet bird, the others are quite mean to her:( I'm thinking if she recovers, I'll try putting her in with my 3 / 6 week olds,,

thanks again
Diane

Sounds like you are doing everything right. I just had that problem with Emma, a BO who is a big, chubby, fluffy girl. The Preparation H is the trick.....I used it everyday for 3 days and the problem seems to have resolved itself. Good luck with your girl. :)

its' been 3 days, and I'm not seeing any progress:( Have bathed her in epsom salt, used vetericyn, prep H, and some desitin, she laid an egg the other day, normal, today she laid one covered in blood:(

She eats/drinks/ acts totally normal altho I do see intermittent panting, I hate to do it but I think I'm going to have to euth her:( I found a vet in my area who will do it. If she hasn't experienced some miracle overnite, I plan on taking her in tomorrow...I feel terrible, but I don't want her to suffer, (tho she seems not to be), can't put her in with the other cannibals..

oh well
Diane
