My first scary, bloody, egg... - warning*gross pics- UPDATE 1/10

I would strongly suggest you get some sort of broad spectrum antibiotic to start with.... if the bloody droppings continue then she either has an extremely bad internal infection of the reproductive organs or she may have Coccidiosis.. and she is laying soft shelled eggs and pushing really hard to get them out

Watch her vent.. she may prolapse

If she was my bird I would isolate her into a warm area with food and water and soft nest for her to sit in if she wanted to

She may be bleeding internally ... so don't what ever you do give her Asprin or anything that will thin her blood at this stage.. that included the Cocci meds..

Try and get the antibiotics to start with and watch her carefully

Unfortunately, I couldn't get a photo...She passed in on the roost and I had 6 other chickens hounding me...I didn't want to risk them eating it while I went up to the house for my camera.

so I cleaned it up kind of fast.

It really didn't look like an egg to me...not at all like the one earlier...but who knows. It was VERY slimy (not bloody), but it didn't smell bad or anything. About 1/3 cup worth of goop I'd say. She passed it about three hours after the bloody one.

I'm going to get up before the light in the AM and check on her. If there's any sign of blood in her droppings I'll see about getting those antibiotics...how do you take a chicken's temperature to determine if there's a fever? Would that be the best indicator of an infection?

Thanks for the suggestions!

Maybe it is the rest of an egg, could the other egg have broken iside her and "cut her". That would account for the blood. Then she passed the inside of the eggt hat broke in her???

If she is acting fine I would just keep hoping and move forward!! Hopefully it was ust a gliche in the system.

Hmmm...well, she IS a new layer. Maybe it COULD have been the remainder of a malformed egg...and the fact that there was no blood in the second one is a good sign, I hope

This morning she went immediately into a nest box when I turned on the lights. She sat in there for an hour or so and then came out to drink and eat a little bit. She's not eating as much as she usually does, but at least she's outside walking around and scratching the dirt and acting more normal than yesterday. She hasn't pooed much this AM, but she hasn't eaten much. The one poo I saw her drop was mostly liquid, and not a spot of blood...sort of a "snot" consistency. And no foul odor or anything. Maybe it's more egg coming out?

I'm hoping that if I'm not seeing blood like yesterday, maybe things are moving on out and she's on the mend. I have to go to work in about an hour, but my instinct is to leave her with the other chickens. It's outrageously warm here today for January in Western NY...62F!! I want her to enjoy it with the rest of the girls

Well, I would still try and get her on some antibiotic if at all possible. Stop by a Tractor supply, they have that stuff out on the shelves. The weather is beautiful up here in NY, so she can at least get out and move around.
Keep us posted.

Well...she was still alive and up on the roost with the rest of the gang when I got home from work tonight.

Don't thing she's eating much though....her crop was empty. She also didn't lay an egg today...there's always the chance that she laid something that they could have eaten though. Right now I wish I had one of those Web cams!!

Anyways...thanks to everyone who's posted. Hopefully she'll keep improving...

2 years ago, I had a chicken who was attacked by a dog. the chicken was near death and I brought her in and put her on a warming pad and gave her a bit of water with an eye dropper. Well, she pulled through and a few hours later, she laid what looked like an egg but it had no shell and was bloody. Very odd.
After that she went back to laying eggs again. So hopefully, your girl will be okay.

Hi there...just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you and your girl, and hoping she makes it through this okay. Please keep us posted.
