My first Silkie ever! Is he Show Quality?

You could have him as a pet bird but you really should not breed him, and the brassy is not from sunlight, he is very cute though!

Well said. Too often birds are culled that may not be the best show material but will produce some awesome off spring because of some negative advice. My focus is breeders. I want birds in my coop that will produce the awesome peeps and if that bird has a fault I will not rehome it until I see what the potential is. As I stated before, do not act in haste. Take your time and think about where you want to go with him.

Just a tidbit. I had a pair of black birds, stunning birds, came from one of the top breeders. Their first ever little cockeral ended up gold in his hackles. Before they went to live with a friend of mine they hatched more chicks. In those chicks were two cockerals, neither of them had the gold in their hackles even after getting their adult feathers. So the possibility is there for him to have clear boys.

I think I will hang on to him for a bit. It helps to know that some of the show people on here have seen worse at the shows. It makes me feel like I won't look like too much of a fool to show him. We will see how he looks after a few months of conditioning. Perhaps we will all be surprised

First page post 9 was by a licensed poultry judge and he said it was a DQ.....

I have anything but poor breeding stock, it is also a highly opinionated statement to say I have bad birds because I named my farm Henely Hatchery. Also, I have seen it, she has posted many good pictures showing the brassy color from every angle, in no way shape or form should he ever place at a show, and if he does it would look very bad on the lincensed judge who placed him there. It is a disqualification to have leakage. Thats all that their is to it.

The yellow bulb is no good for his pics. Get a white bulb & then we'll take another look. He does look to have nice type.

his brassiness(looks genetic to me not from sun) would be a dq in a sanctioned show but if it is in a local fair show not sanctioned he would do fine in regular silkie class depending on his compatition(trust me i have seen way worse too). if a sanctioned show i think he would do better in aov feather leg class so his color is not dqed against him. that is true any bird and any color can be shown in aov classes it is how new breeds/colors r shown to work on to get to be recognized by apa and aba.

i have never seen a brassy parent not throw some sort of brass in an off spring in my personal experiences so i sell them to pet homes but that doesn't mean they can't throw pure colored offspring that r standard color and r better than parents. it is possible to generations and years down the line to breed it out if u have the time and dedication to breed it out of ur lines but most people choose to avoid that if possible. to be honest u can have two exhibition line birds and not get show quality babies from them and u can have pet quality through show quality babies. there is no garontee if a bird is show quality or not because each judge judges differently however most shows do go by apa and aba standards as a guide even if not sanctioned.

i wait till birds r a year old to decide if they r what i feel is quality to me to decide to show or breed or not and after i have used them for breeding to see what quality offspring they throw. with silkies it is tricky one day they can be the ugliest bird ya ever saw and just one day they bloosom into the most beautiful bird over night so i'd wait till he is older and u have him conditioned and u work with him before u decide what to do with him. u shouldn't go by what others think is quality u should learn the standards and then go by what u feel and think r ur own standards cuz when it comes down to it ultimately they r ur birds u need to do what is best for ur breeding pens and ur animals and what is best for u and what u r planning to do with them in the end. everyone has to start somewhere with their breeder stock to be honest he does have nice type and he really is a hansome guy after seeing those last pics. he is definately way closer to standards then my first silkies were when i got them they were partridge cross every color maginable.

i think he would be a good foundation breeder to start with he does have alot going for him.
