Here is a picture of my first ever successful hatch. My Banty went broody this year so we went ahead and let her set. She started with 7 eggs and got rid of one somewhere along the line. She hatched all 6 chicks. My Roo is a light brahma and there other half is who knows. We are going with the highbred vigor theory.

Congrats!!!!! Cute little things aren't they! I have a Molted Java sitting on 5 eggs... She started with 9 and was pretty determined to stay in the coop with her coop mates but alas, she got into a turf war with another hen and 4 of the eggs got broke.. She suffered through the move well and seems content. She is on day 8 and I am itching to candle the eggs to make sure nothing else went wrong in the fight... hopefully be able to tonight.

That's great! They're adorable. I had a bantam who hatched two duck eggs, she was a great mom.

Yesterday was the first time a few of my other flock got to see them and momma Banty was definitely protective if they get anywhere near her babies.

I'm hoping that's how the Java momma is, she is pretty high in the pecking order and she growls enough at me if I just walk into the enclosure I have her.. BTW, I did candle a few nights ago, all 5 of the eggs are growing!

am very excited for you and your new little family. they are sooooo "precious"...will they stay in the hen yard or be seperated in some kind of way? my broody mamas are all OEG hens and setting(...like your banty VERY protective..cannot but 2 in the same enclosure...my plan is to seperate moms from babies at 6 weeks.(will have feathered) ..mom to yard and chicks to a grow pen...pen is 10 x 20 so plenty of room...another hen is now setting..(hatching chicks in incubator as we speak so I plan to put them under the larger black sex linx hen and let her raise them) plan well before you incubate again I didn't "need" to but i "enjoy" to incubate at least once a season..too much fun... what is highbred vigor theory?

Lol, the highbred vigor theory is just a nice way of saying they are mutts. Just like people say mutts dogs live longer and have better health. The chicks and Momma will go back out to the coop but separated in a kennel for a while with "visitation"until the flock accepts them.
