Lots of fun breeds out there. If you are looking for snuggly fun birds, I might recommend Australorps. Mine are huge lap snugglers and follow me around like drooling puppies. Ha!

Also there are non heritage breeds worth considering if you want meat birds and want to slaughter them like Cornish Crosses. It really all depends on the "job description" you assign to your birds.

If you have only tried cx you should really try rangers for meat birds! So so much more flavor.

I wasn't sure on how to read this reply as was it for me or OP who has never kept chicken I was assuming it was meant for me. My wife and I have assigned our flock the job of eye candy in the yard. Also we expect them to forage for whatever keeps the scorpions fed. I have yet to ever eat anything I have raised myself except tomatos and artichokes.

I do support everyone elses right to raise their own chicken for their own intended purposes whether that is for meat or eggs and would love to join you for dinner!
