My first turkey egg today!!! Questions....

I got my first turkey egg yesterday from my blue slate hen. My concern is it is December. Will she continue to lay? Honestly I wasn't expecting this. We found it on the floor in the coop, but I didn't realize it was a turkey egg until I start researching a little. My biggest concern is she was behind the coop this morning behind a folded up portable fence like she was sitting on a nest. Should I put some straw down there for her? I can't imagine laying on a nest in the snow would be good. Or should I not and hope she will be uncomfortable and go inside. Any ideas on what to do?
 
Today I have fount 2 more turkey eggs in the duck nesting house aka the dog house. We don't have a dog it is for the ducks. My question is are they even viable? Last night it was not freezing and today the temp is 45F. It is going to warm up over the weekend. Any suggestions on what I should do with them would be appreciated. FYI I do not have an incubator but would love an excuse to get one :D.
 
Well she has laid an egg everyday this week. I cracked open 2 of them to see if they are fertile and they are. I am not wanting to hatch any eggs right now so I will sell them if anyone wants some Blue slate hatching eggs. Let me know if anyone is interested.
 
Sounds like she is in full production mode.
It would be interesting to see what happens in the spring if she continues to lay or if her cycle stops with time.
 
How old is she? My hens are going to be 8 months old next week and was wondering if mine are about to start laying.

I agree retlaw. She is in full production mode. We keep 2 fake eggs in her nest and she lays faithfully almost every day. I go out every day to gather the egg so it doesn't freeze. I don't want her to hatch them out yet as it is just the beginning of winter. I have sold 6 of the eggs so far. I am excited to hear what the hatch rate is like. She is mated every day so I know she is fertile.

She is 7 months old. She has laid 10 eggs and only missed 1 day. I really wasn't expecting this, but it is exciting :). I would hatch the eggs myself but don't want to keep the poults in the house for the next 3 months.
 
Remember the time frame here.
You collect them for a couple weeks and then it takes a month to incubate.
And then the first two weeks if pretty easy.
So that,s two months.
The benefit here is you start spring off with bigger birds then anyone else has.

Also you might go through a few dozen before you even get one.
Turkey's are harder to incubate then chickens.
It can take a couple tries to figure out the incubator.
 
That is a good point. I just know we are having some major remodeling done in January and didn't want to mess with babies at the same time. I will be getting an incubator in a few weeks so I may just go ahead and try. That would put them hatching mid February. As long as all the construction was finished I would be fine with that. I am in Indiana. Anyone have any suggestions as to when they could be outside in a small coop? I would add a heat lamp of course.
