My Flaming Red Orpington Roo - New Photos pg 11

Big Red was the first blue roo orp x buff hen orp egg I have ever hatched

He came from tuffoldhen's eggs. The egg was in with some blue orp eggs because she had the buff hen in there. It was too cold to take her out so the egg got mixed in with the other orps from her breeding pen. I don't know the origin of her blue roo but her buff hen was from Jody and Charlie's buff lines.

When he was old enough and I knew he was trying to mount the pullets from the same hatch he came from I put him in my main laying house as the flock roo until I could I figure out what to do with him.

When I decided how I was going to try and breed him I put him in with some buff orps I had from MM hatchery stock.

The new baby came from the first set of 3 eggs I set. I got 2 blondes (that can still have a chance to feather out red according to Tim) and the little rusty brown chick.

I had SUPER good luck. It usually isn't so easy to get what you hope for. Genetics is a crap shoot when you are playing with wild cards.

Most blue x buff crosses turn out blue with some buffish color on the chest. TOH has a pullet she hatched like that. Some of the other people who have tried the cross came up with some blue, some buff and smudgey colored chicks. So far I know of no one who has tried the cross that has come up with a chicken like Big Red.

If they are out there I would love to see some photos and results of their breeding program.

As soon as my 6 pullets from Jody's stock get up to age and size they will be Big Red's harem.

It's a shame I didn't know you were doing this sooner. I hatched 8 black X buff orp chicks and they looked exactly like big red as babies. I sold them as day olds because I had no need for them. They probably would have been great for your project. Looking forward to watching your progress.
