The duke dog proof leg traps work well for coons.

Until you know what the predator is you won't know the best method of trapping.

When I trap animals that are messing with my chickens I get as far away as I can from the chickens themselves and still catch them. Otherwise all your doing is bringing in more problem animals that most likely haven't hurt your birds.

That is true, but when the animal spots the easy-to-get food, it will most likely go after the easy meal, rather than going through all the trouble to get inside the coop.

IMO, if the bait is stinky enough they'll find it. What I like about the mackerel is that the smell is strong and it's dirt cheap. Much cheaper than even sardines.
