Hi everyone!! Growing up, we had a couple chickens for about a year on my parent's acreage, but Dad got tired of them, so he gave them to some neighbors. Once I'd started a family of my own and got my own acreage, I decided it would save us some money to get our eggs from our own chickens, plus help the kids learn about the circle of life and all sorts of other benefits! So, two years ago, I bought 2 barred rocks (Helen and Wanda), 2 Production Reds (Ruby and Reba), and 2 Silver laced wyandottes (Betty White and Betty Davis). I must say I've enjoyed it more than I imagined and our ladies are fantastic egg layers! The silver laced wyandottes are probably the prettiest birds I've ever seen! In February of this year, either Helen or Wanda (I lost track of who was who), got a grey comb and wattle and then soon after I found her face flat in the coop, dead as a doornail. We decided that, as our chickens were 2 years old and one passed away, we probably should look at adding to our flock. Timing was wonderful, since it gives us something to look forward to every day during quarantine!! However, getting the chicks was more of a challenge than we'd hoped since everyone wanted chicks during quarantine!! We knew we wanted some chickens that would lay green/blue eggs, but the first 2 weeks we tried, all they had was brown egg layers, so we ended up with 2 Golden comets (Sophie and Sophie 2...thanks to my 2 year old for those names) and 2 that were supposed to be Black Sex Link pullets (Kangan and Wydo...thanks to my 4 year old for those names) but are absolutely not...not sure if they're BSL cockerels or another breed, yet to find out! So we decided to try one more time and finally got 3 Americaunas (Swimmy, Rock and Cotton). The Americaunas are the cutest chicks ever! I love their cheeks! Can't wait to watch them grow and see what the supposed BSL Pullets turn out to be! I'll need help from this group to figure out what they are, as I'm no chicken breed or gender expert!!
