My Flock (Wyandottes)

What beautiful birds you have aquila. Do you think some electrified fencing surrounding coop and run would help?

Thank you!

The coop is reasonably secure (except I am always burying more bricks and wire to outsmart the ground squirrels) and the whole barn set up down there is without power. I would need to use solar electric fencing and to be honest, I think I would be better off improving the property's perimeter fence. We're on ~22 acres with all fenced in but some in bad need of maintenance, and these hens like to range on about a third of that acreage. There's no way I could electrify it all but it could definitely be more secure.

What a gorgeous flock :loveand where you live looks amazing too! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you!

Here are a couple of pictures around the property. A lot of it is in disrepair but we're doing our best to get it back into shape. We are really fortunate to be here on my grandma's old farm, there's no other way we would have an opportunity to live like this and this place means a lot to me as I spent a lot of time here growing up.

Here's the view of the Willamette valley and Cascade mountains if you climb to the top of the hill in our pasture. Mt. Jefferson is there on the right side of the frame, looking particularly lovely in all that white.

And our old farmhouse in the snow this past winter. We still have a lot of windows to repair and other renovation work to do but we got our wood stove in last autumn and I love it!

Oh wow wow wow! I've never been to America but seeing photos like that just make me want to come for a visti!! What a lovely story and amazing home :love

Your flock is gorgeous! :love I especially love Goldie :) They look so healthy and happy :love

Thank you! Haha Goldie is the queen of the flock and she knows it! She's usually pretty benevolent though.

Thank you, I think like most places there is beauty here if one looks for it and tends to it. I bet your home is beautiful too!

As of today, Pebble is still trying to be broody even after being locked out of the coop and away from her favorite nest box consistently every day from morning until evening. She ranges with the others and eats but she's back to the nest box every night, sometimes even if I put her on the perch after dark. I haven't ever used a wire cage to break a broody but she is extremely determined and I've got nowhere to get fertile eggs for her even if I did want more chicks right now, which I don't. So she has to be broken, one way or another, and I don't want to dunk her when our weather is still so iffy. She feels like she is dropping a bit in weight at this point, despite eating a bit, and I don't want her to go through all that for nothing.

I admit that their tendency toward broodiness is one of the reasons why I chose wyandottes, but why do they have to do it with no eggs to sit on at all and no rooster in the flock (yet)?!

Awww bless her! I'm not sure what I'm going to do about broodies being broody at inconvinient times - I'm not sure how I feel about the wire cage thing (and I don't have one!). I'll probably be OK for a while just giving them a couple of eggs :hmm! It is a shame there is no one with fertile eggs near you.

Today we finished up the "introduction box" and moved this year's chicks out to the coop with the adult hens!

It's 5ft x 3ft with hardware cloth on the bottom, chicken wire sides and a latching top that opens upwards. We put cardboard and bedding on the bottom and placed the whole shebang near the hens' feeding station so everyone can get used to one another in safety and security.
