My foster DD's been granted a wish from Make-a-Wish...I'm clueless...

Thank you to everyone thanking us for being a foster parent. I have to say deciding to do it was one of the scariest decisions I've ever made (like deciding to have kids

) Some of the "worst case scenerios" they tell you about in training kept me up at night! It was especially scary to be offered a child that was so sick, but we didn't hesitate. I can't explain it, it just felt right and she fits so well here, so it doesn't feel like we did anything spectacular. Thank you for all your kind words - you're all making me cry!

think of a really popular girly celeb that she know or likes and have them go shopping for a day or something.... thats what my friends doughter did when she got a wish thing

Wow!

I guess it's different in every state, but the letter they sent me said specifically "no constructions" and that also means no swimming pools. She just got her first bathing suit and she wants to go swimming so bad! She's probably going to be scared to death!

They said the most common wishes are to go somewhere or to meet someone like a movie star or a favorite team!

You are so wonderful for taking in a foster child and being there for her while she has been going through so much!! If she chooses Disney World in Florida, see if you can stay at Give Kids The World (google it), it is a wonderful place to stay where everything is paid for,it's like a condo to stay in, they have alot of activities to do there, restaurants (free food!!) etc, and they provide transportation to all the local attractions like Busch Gardens,SeaWorld, etc, etc. I have had many friends who have stayed there when their children had their wishes granted and I have heard only good things about the place!! My son got his wish granted and we were supposed to go there this past March, but we had to put it on hold as he got sick and needed his VP shunt replaced because of infection and he was in the hospital for a month right before Christmas. Hopefully next year we will get there.
We will keep your foster daughter in our prayers, what a trooper she has been to go through all of the chemo and stuff! I know what it's like, my son had a Bone Marrow Transplant 6 years ago.

Take care, Trish

I think Disneyworld in FL has a deal where the girl gets to be a princess for the day. She gets a sparkley gown in whatever color she likes (though they are predominantly PINK), a tiara, sparkly makeup and a festive hairdo. I even think there are shoes involved. I think the makeover is then followed by lunch with the princesses. I don't know exactly. I vaguely remember reading something in Southern Living magazine. I remember wanting to do it with my young nieces, but it's kind of pricey. Perhaps Make-A-Wish could add something like that to the Disney trip. Everything about it was geared for girly-girls!

Go you for loving on this child! You are a blessing!

What great mommy you are!!!

Those are really deserving kids...(unlike my exBIL) but that's another story...

I also have to agree with Cinderella's Castle and there's like a breakfast with the characters and things like that...
We went to Disneyworld 2003 BC (before chickens) and it was great.

vickie2x2, I had shunts and 2 heart surgeries way back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, and it amazes me what they can do these days.

That is so great of you to foster this little one. I would take her to stay in the cinderella castle at disney world. We went to disney world in November 2006 and had a blast, of course we didn't stay in the cinderella castle. The castle was actually designed for Walt Disney himself so you know it has to be awesome.

A friend of the family had a little boy who had cancer. He wasn't doing very well and was bed ridden. his one wish was to meet his favorite football team. He got to meet them and spend the day with them. Got VIP treatment at a game and all kinds of stuff to bring home.

He died 2 days after his 16th birthday.
this wasn't part of "Make-A-Wish", but he wanted his drivers license. So on his 16th birthday the drivers ed teach went to the DMV in town and got his licenses issued to him. Even though he couldn't drive and was dying. (The teacher had this planned with the DMV and state already~~just incase). Not even the boys parents knew about it, so they were just as surprised as there son.
Anyway he came up to the house to give him is licenses and his face lit up go much. It was one of the happiest days in a long time for him. He died 2 days later. He actually was burried with his license in his hands.

Everytime I see the Make-A-Wish camercial where the little boy wanted to be a superhero for the day (someone else dresses up as the villian) I start to cry.

Is there a time limit on when she has to have her wish picked?? If not have her write down everything that interests her. Maybe something could be combined to make it extra special.

Hope for the best for your daughter and your family.

Disney would be wonderful, but here are some other ideas
Neuschanstein Castle in Germany, its what Disney based its castle on
Australia Zoo...see where the Crocodile Hunter lived/worked
A tropical beach vacation with full spa treatment (Hawaii)
Camping, canoeing, horseback riding, swimming
A trip to DC to see the National Zoo and Smithsonian Museums
Meeting someone she is interested in: Hannah Montana, a sports figure, the President, a favorite author, anyone
appearing on American Idol

You know what this child might like. Its sad that her world has been so limited that she doesn't know how to dream big. Because she has never had a vacation, that might be a good option, a wonderful fantasy vacation. Maybe read books, show her things on the internet, and try to discover what she would love. Thank you for making the commitment to care for a child with such needs.
