WOW!!! That is a lot for a coop. I can feel the pain all the way over here. Some builders don't like using recycled material for whatever reason but it saves the person who has to purchase the material so much money.


newchknmama, explain to your DH that all coops made from Free or recycled wood don't look cheap. Show him my link below and let me him know that this was built at a whopping cost of $38.00. I don't think that my peacock aviary looks cheap. And I understand not starting an argument over something like a coop. These days, materials are so expensive. All of my material is free or recycled and a VERY low cost. I will NEVER pay for new wood/posts/etc. NEVER! That is why I hustle all the time to get free things from Craigslist and my Freecycle group. I had a peacock aviary built (28 feet long - 10 feet wide - 8 feet tall) and I only spent $38.00 ($20.00 for 3 yards of sand and $18.00 for 2 plants). The person that built this aviary, well it was his first time EVER building anything! He now builds EVERYTHING for me.

Cheap and Free is the type of blood that runs through my veins.

You're welcome. I didn't take your comment in a negative way. I knew exactly what you were talking about. No harm done.

. Now believe me, I have seen some cheap coops where they used recycled materials.

. And I certainly understand not having the time. Finding all of this stuff takes A LOT of time. If I were rich, I would buy stuff at Lowe's every weekend and not even think twice about it. But because I"m on a budget, I have to budget the little money that I have to spend on building materials for my animals. Whenever you build your dream coop, please don't forget to post pics. I would love to see it.

Yea, using free and recycled materials definitely doesn't mean you'll have a trashy ghetto coop!

Nearly 90% recycled materials in this! It is nearly done, too

It looks like it will be a darn nice coop!

We lucked out and spent about $150 on our coop. They are in a room in the barn about 20 x 30 feet, we just need some concrete to patch the holes(about $20) 2 new windows (farmer down the road was selling theirs..$10 for both), and a new door with lock to put on. We just open the door in the morning and prop it open with a cinderblock, and the birds can free range until everyone else is put in for bed (or they put themselves in bed).

It may not be the nicest looking coop on the inside, but the birds have plenty of room and are happy.

I can promise when chicken math hits me I WILL NOT be buying all new again. When I start to feel the urge, i will start gathering recycled material. I am not against recycled at all, just did not have alot of time to try to gather it. I always put the cart before the horse.
