my future coop was almost purchased!

I will have to agree, that is a lot for an 8x12. The only thing is if you don't have the tools to build it yourself.
It would be a great time for you and your mom to tackle this project together.
Places to look for cheap lumber, lowe's , and home depot will discount lumber if it is warped or chipped out real bad.(forklift damage).
Building sites. Ask if they have a pile that they are going to burn. They may have left over shingles, cut off 2x4's . I picked up at least 30 16ft 2x4's that had some nails in them, that I pulled out.
Builders don't want to have to pick up anything they don't have to. If you treat them right, they will always let you come back.
Good luck with whatever you do.

That is a lot of money for what you are getting with the cost of lumber these days..

Waferboard 4' x 8' sheet is just over 5.00
2 x 4 is 1.65

72" metal roofing (colors red, green and etc) is running 11.00

I am building mine...no way I am paying 1200.00 for something I can build for around 400.00.

Good luck to you. The girls will love whatver you build for them...

yea the girls are starting to get a little bit crowded they are 5.5 weeks so I guess its time to let go

Thank you! It was really far more than I ever expected my DH to build! The UPS man is always amazed when he drops of packages here. He has to walk around the coop and check out the chickens every time!

The best part about this coop is that we didn't have to spend to much to build it. If you take the time to call around, you'd be amazed at how much free wood you can come up with!

Ticks,
If this building will work as a coop for you, then purchase it.
Not everyone can scrounge around for materials, nor figure out a plan, nor build the thing.

If you're able to make this into a chicken coop, then buy it. And then post photographs, please...

Agree, building from scratch is not for everyone due to time, skills, interest, etc and you will end up with a very nice coop via many different paths.

We are modifying a shed kit for our coop. So far it is turning out great!

Will definitely want to see the pictures!

 I wouldn't have chickens if it would have cost us that much.

Luckily we just had to clean out and fix up an old storage shed (20x7) we never spent a cent... all hard work and stuff we found lying around.

Even our run is made with fencing we found...

we have since spent a little to fence off the entire back yard for their scratching pleasure.

(I'm currently working on another smaller shed, to get it cleaned out for MORE CHICKs or DUCKS)
