my future coop was almost purchased!

I was not trying to make you feel bad about your decision to go with a shed for a coop, Ticks. If I didn't have my DH, that is what I would have had to do. I don't know how to build anything! If you don't have any other option and can afford to spend the money, then hey! Go for it! I've seen lots of nice storage buildings that I would like to turn into another coop! I saw one at Lowe's yesterday that would be wonderful, except for the $2600 price tag on it!

It had sky lights and everything.

Like I posted previously. Good luck with whatever you decide to do! I'm sure it will be wonderful regardless. Be sure to post pics when it's done.

I would like everyone to remember here that not all threads are started by adults.

Ticks is not an adult.

$1400 is a LOT of money at any age. To have to come up with $200 to help pay for a coop is tough for a kid.

How about we help with ways he could build a small coop for his chickens and not feel bummed out and let down to not have a nice place for his girls to live?

I think he could start collecting pallets. 7 pallets would give a nice start to framing out a small coop house.

Pallets are a great idea!

I definitely wasn't tryng to make anyone feel bad and am sorry if I did. :-(

Heck, $200 is a lot for me, too! ;-) I am super duper thrifty and often forget everyone isn't that way!

BUT I def. do suggest craigslist if you don't mind used. I know there's a metal shed on a local one here for $50 that was bought new from Lowe's 2yrs ago. I don't need another one that big or I would jump on it.

i would watch craigs list or http://www.freecycle.org/ alot of times people have sheds that they give away free.Of course you would have to take it apart then put it back together.
Im am allways looking for a bargian, see i get all my wood for free from the local Amish lumber mill.Heck if you could find a free shed that would save you 200 bucks to buy more chickes or stuff for your chickes....

Okay. I think I got it. I underestimated how much space I would need so I am hopefully going with an 8x10 which is quite a bit lower so I would give my parents 200$ from my 8th grade graduation (which is soon) And their gift to me was going to be a coop.

That's awesome ticks! I hope my kids are still in to chickens by 8th grade. My oldest (10 1/2) is already figuring out how much work it is to be a farmer.

Really he doesn't like it? I think it is a really good way to learn and have something and watch it grow. I just started liking chickens about 5.5 weeks ago.

Next coop I build is going to have a sod roof. Evaporative cooling in the summer, insulation in the winter, and no shingles to buy. I'll post the specifics of how to do it if anyone's interested.

We've been doing it for about two years now...and if it's not baseball or video games, he doesn't need it. Too bad for him because he has to do it, anyway.

My others still love them, though and don't mind doing the chores at all.
