my future coop was almost purchased!

I am very interested. Please do!

Here ya go (don't forget that the framing must be twice as strong as for a shingle roof):

green roof pitch: 1.5 in 12, no more than 1 in 5.

Roof planking: 2 inch tongue-and-groove

waterproofing membrane directly over planking

extruded polystyrene insulation over waterproofing membrane (optional)

6 mil black polyethylene plastic over insulation (if insulation is used)

composite drainage matting over black plastic (cotton towels from the thrift store work well)

7-8 inches of soil

A layer of hay bales can also be used to cover the roof. Good insulation, and they will eventually turn into a living roof.

This is EXACTLY what I was trying to do in my first post.

There are cheaper ways to get a coop made than to buy a shed. Try to post on your local freecycle or craigslist and see if you can come up with a large dog house. That would be a good starting point anyways! You also can try the glass companies to see if you can get some pallet wood. Explain to them how old you are and what you are trying to build. A lot of my wood came from glass companies and is was VERY nice wood! If building isn't in the picture for you, then good luck with whatever you choose to do.

hehe My husband is about as handy as my poodle is. ;-)

I do all of my building myself...and then my dad will come visit the kids and decide I need help. ;-) Not always and I can do okay by myself. He's taught me a lot. Wish DH's dad would've taught him how to build, but you can bet between my dad and I, we are teaching all of mine (boys AND girls!).

The sod roof sounds interesting.... here in so. California I would have to figure out a way to irrigate.

How much weight per square yard approximately? How deep is the soil used? And what type of bearings would you need to hold it all up?
