My girl is laughing

I can tell you that is not a sound of happiness. Its a sign of distress or unhappiness. From what i can see in the video they are in a small space. She is trying to get out of the cage. All my birds do that when they are unhappy.Like when there laying an egg and others are in the coop.Or when they get chased off from there food bowl.IME Happy chickens are quite.

I have a pullet about 20ish weeks old. She is a bantam what looks to be possibly and old English. She constantly makes noises that sound like she is laughing. I understand that chickens make all kinds of noises, but this one is new to me. What do you think it is?

I have a pullet that sounds like a taun-taun when she preens. I keep trying to get a vid of it, but I can never catch her doing it when I have a the phone out.

The area she's in looks small but it's not too small. That's just the "front porch" so to speak. Ithey have an inside and a backyard as well.
This particular moment that I was taking a video, I was giving the, treats and I was trying to isolate her. When they all heard her "laughing," they all came running and pinned her in the corner. She does this all the time. I love listinging to her. One day I tripped over the corner of the cage and right on time she started making her noise as if to say ,"You're so funny!" She never seems to be in distress when she makes this noise. It's always when I'm talking to them or feeding them. I have a feeling she will start laying any day now! Thanks for all the responses!
I love it here at BYC!!!!!!

I couldn't disagree more. My girls are very noisy when they are happy or excited. A couple of them are just noisy period.

It is a:“I want, I want, I want!!!“ sound, definitely not a laugh, but also not as dire as a distress call. As I said, you’ll hear it when they ask for food or to be let out or yes, when they think they would like the nest box now that is occupied. They will most often direct this call at you. If you pay attention, you’ll mostly hear it when they can see or hear you. Or, if they are on regular schedules to be let out or fed, you’ll hear it around that time, and definitely if you are late and even more once they realize you are coming.
If you were giving treats and keeping this hen apart, yes, she is clamoring!

Hey Everybody,

I have at least seven hens that do that constantly every week. My older hens normally, sometimes it's the "egg song" when a hen is getting ready/already laid an egg.
Sometimes a hen will do it when another hen is laying an egg... My theory is that the one hens tries to distract predators, other hens & a rooster from the layer. Yes- it sounds like laughing and each hen has a different reason for doing it.
One of my flocks (9 yrs old) do it all the time. They are nine for heaven's sake! Obviously it's not a bad thing, they've done it their whole life. (Although I admit it may be caused by stress in the coop/flock... But I know my hens aren't stressed and neither looks yours).

I swear my flocks tell jokes!! I walk up there and they coffee cloche... Sitting in a circle beside each other making those laughing sounds. Too cute and funny.

Beautiful hen by the way! I hope I helped a bit. Most of the reviews on the sound folks gave above are very knowledgeable. Good luck and God bless!! Have a nice evening.

Sincerely,
-The Angry Hen
