I'd make an effort to find someone to return the ring to. Did the lady have siblings, nephews? That ring was not meant for you.

Then, after an honest effort, do what you'd like. Sell it, wear it, eat it, throw it back outside...

My dad found a ring on the driveway of the filling station that he worked at. He asked if anyone had lost one and no one had, so he kept it gave it to me and 5 years later my dh(so at the time) took the ring, made me a wedding ring and with the ruby made my mom a necklace. My dad is now gone to heaven but I still remember him every time I look at that ring. My mom thinks of him every time she wears her necklace. I guess those were not ours to keep either?

If it were me I would search for the owner-I love a good detective case, and I'm sentimental.

However, I also don't think it wrong if you don't. You know that the lady there before you is dead and had no children.

But I would just HAVE to dig deeper

Folks, there is nobody to try and return the ring to. The woman was in her 90's, an unmarried spinster with no siblings. Who the heck am I going to try and return it to?
I am an honest person and if I thought there were anyone to ask about it, I would have done so.

I would think that if I lost a ring in my barn and then sold my property I would mention it and say "hey if you ever find a ring it belongs to me" if it was that important. I say good find for your little chickies and enjoy
