Ok, sometimes I am quite envious of the rural located folk with more land. Today, I am very glad I live in the city. Yes, loving my low predator locale!

Who needs guard dogs with chickens like that. I wouldn't want to mess with your girls... ever.

My girls are very sweet, and want to help me with all I do in the pen. They talk all the time, some more than others. That snake attack is the first time I have seen them in action. When they were little, they would chase a bird if it got into the area. They also were in a pack. That was fun to watch. I don't get birds in there as the top is pretty secure now.

I love living in the Boonies, The glory I get far outweighs the bad critters. There are trade off's no matter where you live, Don't you think?

Wow! clever, brave hens !! We do not have snakes or scorpions in New Zealand. I cannot imagine what it is like to always be on the alert for such things. I guess it becomes second nature to you folk who have these critters. Do you ever have ferrets or stoats ? They are killers of hens in our country. If you do could your hens win the battle? It is my understanding that the ferrets and stoats mesmerize the hens so the hen does not put up a fight. The stoat is really nasty as they just kill all the hens they can. They don't bother to eat them.So you could lose all your hens in one foul attack.

Stoats are basicly a larger form of weasel.

Wow! Great of those chickens to kill that little rattler! And a scorpion too!?!

AZ has several types of rattlers, but no copperheads, cottonmouths or other venomous snakes.

BUT... you can find Gila Monsters and their cousins Mexican Beaded Lizards!

I think that you just get used to always being aware of your surroundings. I don't think they would have a chance with a Fox, or the big guys you have in New Zealand. or in the US. I don't know how the girls would act if a BIG RATTLER got into the pen. The built in reactions they have is great. I would love to be able to take them for a walk with me this time of year. You don't have to worry about the snakes in the winter, however I have seen 1 or 2 sunning in the winter. Several years between sightings. The chickens are the best hunters for all sorts of bugs. One thing they really like is Lizards, they can catch them sometimes and the chase is on.
