fuzzi's Chicken Journal

All of this cold weather has me lethargically ready to do a re-read of The Long Winter/Laura Ingalls Wilder. Somehow, reading about months of successive blizzards on the prairie in the 1880s has the effect of making one feel much cozier here in the 21st century 🤠
My favorite book in the series.

Here we snow again...

Made me go look at the forecast for WNC. I was NOT expecting that!

@Wyorp Rock @Appalachickens
Sorry, I'm spacing on the rest of my WNC/ET peeps!
The snow is supposed to be dry ?? We don't normally get dry snow whatever that means?

Wind chills over the weekend are reportedly going to be -18 to -20F or so, I sure hope not.

@fuzzi and @lightm may get more snow than WNC. Are ya'll getting ready? I think you'll also have gusting winds.

I got ready last week before the ice storm, but I'm thinking of adding some cardboard or tarps on the roost end of the hoop coops, just to block wind, and possible drifting snow.

And I have two snow shovels, though they're not that big.

Dry snow. Soooo… water that isn’t wet? Or is that a weird way to distinguish regular snow from slushy snow?

We have a snow shovel, but nowhere to use it really. I generally use it to scoop up leaves off the cement pad where my garden shed is. The driveway is gravel so if it snows heavily, we’re just stuck, but we did lay in a bunch of water and firewood.

Dry snow has less moisture, doesn't pack, blows around and drifts readily. Can't make a snowman or snowballs with it. But it is easier to shovel.

If snow accumulates then I use a snow shovel to scoop the snow away from the fence gate, and chicken coop doors. Dry snow can be swept off steps with a broom IF done so before stepping on the surface.
