My girls won't roost at night!

You don't need a ladder. They are young, they will all eventually have that instinct kick in. In 40 years I've never had chicken not roost.

I know silkies have a tendency not to roost.

When we got our first 3 hens and there chicken tractor from our friends, the girls had slept in the nesting boxes for there entire year's lifetime. The chicken tractor had no room for a roost. When we built our new coop (in my signature below), the three 1 year olds were the first ones up to the top roosting bar. It seemed instictual like others have said. Now our 5 pullets, they originally liked to sleep on the floor like the original posters chickens. They have gradually began moving higher and higher.

Be patient, it will happen. We have had to put at least 2 of our pullets on the bottom roosting bar for the past 2 weeks. We find them resting on the poop board in the evening when we put them to bed. Part of me believes they are on the poop board, because of the pecking order. I have also witnessed three times now, the adults from the top bar trying to peck the younger pullets sitting on the bottom bar. I think they might be to close together. Time will tell, as the pullets only get older and bigger.

We have a ramp in our coop for future silkie's in our flock too...

I have 2 production reds and one California white. I have a perch in the run and also the coop. They only perch in the run, and at night they sleep on the perch in the run. The only time they go inside the coop is early morning at light. And once in the coop then lay on the floor. They are 15 weeks old. Should I put them in the coop at night or is this OK for them to be in the run all night?

Depends if your run is predator proof. If it is, then when they want shelter, they will go into the coop naturally for warmth and protection.

If you want them to sleep in there (like we do), then I would begin putting them in the coop at night, each night, till they get the idea. Our pullets figured it out within 3 nights of us putting them in there at night. Now they, along with the adults, put them selves to bed at dusk. All my wife or I have to do is go close the coop door. And maybe put 2 pullets on the roosting bar still : P

It is fully predator proof and I don't mind them staying outside. I just want to make sure they will use there nesting boxes that are in the coop when the time comes I just want to make sure they know where to lay there eggs. Thanks!

I figure it out!

at night one of my girls does a special loud chirp, that calls everyone in for bedtime. Well tonight when she started that I went in the coop and everyone was in there and to my surprise all but 3 of my girls were on the roost. And the one that calls everyone in was still on the floor! So I picked up the last of my girls and put them on the roost I am going to check to see if they are all still there in a few minutes. It was the bedtime singer that was keeping them on the floor. I have never had this problem before in the past. I had problems getting them to go back in the coop at night but never any problems roosting. I think because I had them in the coop for 2 weeks before they could go into the run it made the difference. So to the person that has the problem with them going in at night, make them! Lock them down so they can't get out until you let them out. Make sure you have the proper amount of ventilation in the coop. If it is cool enough or warm enough were your at you might try leaving them locked in for couple days, or just let them out about an hour before dark, and make sure they go back in at dark. Just for a few days and see if that solves your problem. The last time I had that problem with my last flock it was warm out so I started chasing them inside with the water hose! And I think I didn't have enough ventilation in my last coop. It really does make a difference.

Ok I am back with pics! Everyone still up on the roost and nobody on the floor!

I didn't take a flash light with me so forgive the pics!

Good night ladies and sorry I woke you so rudely! They really weren't happy about the picture taking, I think it had something to do with the sudden flash going off in the darkness! lol! Thanks everyone for you help. And the poo board gets put in tomorrow!

I have my little ladies locked up inside the coop for the first time. I will take the door off when I leave for work In the morning. Hopefully I can get them to sleep in the coop by the end of the week.

Coryred are you free ranging? Hopefully they will all return to the coop at bedtime! Then lock the door behind them. And let them back out tomorrow.
